Nope, he doesn't want to claim when he is abroad.
How do you make sure you get the weeks money before you go?

    Yes, he does.

No he doesn't. He's asking about getting the week's money between the last signing date and going away.

If you sign on say 6th June, then you go out the country on the 12th which means you miss your next signing day how does it work? How do you make sure you get the weeks money before you go? I know you dont get it while you are away btw. I just wondered what happens in this scenario?

You just wondered? 'Course you did ...

OP, ignoring the argument about whether you can go abroad or not on benefits, because of course you can, all you need to do is ring the job centre, and go in on the day before you go. As you are going overseas, your claim will be ended, and then started up again once you go back in the day after you return. They will also advise you on the payment date for the week before you go away.

Can I point out that contribution based JSA is payable for six months even if the claimant has significant savings.

How do you know it's not a gift from a family member or partner? Or maybe he is going to visit a sick relative or a funeral. OK, I doubt the latter, but you shouldn't judge so quick.

Exactly. Last time I was unemployed, I went on holiday to America for my mum's 50th, which my Dad paid for. The spending money was money I had saved from when I was working.

It was booked before I started claiming, which is another possibility in this case.

Obviously, I didn't get paid for the two weeks I was away as I wasn't available for work.

If you can afford to travel overseas, you don't need benefits.

After I was made redundant in 2007 after 35 years of continuous employment, I was entitled to 6 months contribution based jobseekers allowance and despite hating every second of going to that God forsaken jobcentre, I had no qualms whatsoever about claiming what I was entitled to - I don't make the rules for qualifying for benefit - I just abide by them!

Could I afford to travel overseas during my period of unemployment?
Yes I could - and did so frequently because my wife and I had saved over our working lives and we both received a decent redundancy package.

Claiming my unemployment benefit what I was entitled to (even though I did not need it) could be viewed by others as the same as those many families (but not all) who have substantial incomes and have claimed child benefit over the years. I just wonder how many posters on this forum have received or are receiving child benefit or council tax/other benefits who have also had the audacity to go abroad on holiday!

It could be suggested by others that there is a resentment by some on this thread regarding unemployed people receiving what they are entitled to.
I'm pretty sure you can't effectively search for work, when you're not even in the same country.

Yes you can. When I was unemployed, I applied for two jobs from a hotel in Los Angeles via the internet and browsed the same job sites that I did at home every day.

    Enjoy your trip red devil.

Sorry.... Read all the presumptuous nonsense and decided to skip to the bottom.

If you go abroad when receiving contribution based JSA, you have to come off this and reapply for it all over again when you return.

    I know this from experience.

I was out of work for 5 months, depression creeping in, struggling to pay the mortgage/bills, had gone through £4000 of savings just to survive. I was one month away from receiving income based JSA, which would have stopped me losing the house.

My parents offered to pay for my flight to go stay at their place in Spain for a week and I took it.
When I returned I got a call from a job i'd applied for, got the job and haven't looked back.

Had I not got the job however, i'd have had to reapply all over again and wait another 6 months to get income based JSA, meaning I would have lost the house for sure.
