From what I remember, that is only available if you are renewing at he correct time, besides, it can take up to a week for the disc to come through and driving without displaying a valid road fund licence (unless in the first five days of the month) is, I believe, an offence. Go to the post office and have it done instantly.

I doubt you'll get fined. I drove my car for years without a valid tax disc and wasn't fined during that time or when I went to the DVLA office to change it. I didn't even have a disc in the windscreen at all, I'm not sure how no-one ever noticed really.

Just get the disc asap and have it dated from beginning of May.
