Heres the deal,

My car tax ran out at the end of April and I genuinely forgot about it. I just realised tonight and so am going to the post office first thing to get a disc...I'm over the 14 days eeeeeeeeeeek

Will they fine me? Will they even sell me a disc??

No, they won't fine you. They'll sell you a disc, buy one online now if you want :)

http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/ Go here and do vehicle enquiry on your car and it will say Licence due to expire, not expired.

I think they will still sell you one it's not as if you are trying to get out of paying a month as it automatically starts from the day your last one ends!! You can but try it!! good luck

Sorry to be bearer of bad news but they might fine him! Not when he goes to tax the vehicle though, it'll be a letter through the post for not retaxing or declaring SORN. £80 I think?

Not necassarily true...If he/she waited until next month, the disc wouldn't be pre-dated to start in April, it would start in May/June.

By mistake I once drove (about 2 years ago) for over a month without tax. I contacted the local DVLA, they said buy one from the current month (can't be backdated) and send us a cheque for (£18 roughly) the month you have missed. Thats was the last I heard of it

Strange because they have been sending out £80 penalties automatically since January 2004.

I think I remember reading the grace period was a week or two but perhaps it is or has been longer in the past. I guess all the OP can do is tax as soon as possible and keep the fingers crossed there is no fine.

    They could.

But, they won't. It won't even be on the system as expired yet.
