dump ie and switch to Opera 11 or FF or Chrome /BLOODBATH IN THE EVENING THEN? OR PERHAPS THE AFTERNOON? OR THE MORNING? OH, FORGET THIS MALARKEY!

Thanks Biggles but that's a tedious exercise. It should stay there up for me because I use favorites a lot whilst browsing and also the inprivate browsing.
Are you actually talking about the 'Favorites Bar'? That does stay up there (IE8 & IE9), and I use it all the time too.
If you right-click at the top and tick 'Favorites Bar' it will show all the time.
If you mean you want all your favorites to show all the time, click on the star for the favorites drop-down and click the arrow that is visible at the top, the side bar will be visible all the time then.0 -
yes, I'm talking about the menu bar which also has an option to look at favorites
and the view button which has all the tool bars options
and I'm not at all used to firefox or opera or any other browsers; I have firefox as a backup and I don't enjoy using it at all. I want my IE8, and this update thing on the tray ...
... to vanish0 -
As stated by Danmanchester, If you select Menu bar & then select Lock the toolbar the Menu bar stays on permanently in IE9.0

Not sure why the uodate reminder stays on the tray, when I spurned IE9, it didn't stay there past the next boot up.0 -
Did you see the new IE9? You must've, considering the control freak it is
imposing on your page asking for it to be updated.
Is there a way to rid of this? I could've ignored it, but then that would mean I'll miss out on important updates.
Select Custom, deselect IE9 update, select "Don't show this update again" so it is hidden from regular updates.
I have IE8 update hidden.:rotfl:

You should be able to hide updates at www.windowsupdate.com so you are not reminded again.

If you have Windows 7 run windows updates, click where it says how many updates there are, or optional, remove the tick for IE9 then left click it to highlight, then right click, click hide this update0

There's no option to ask not to be reminded. Each time I logon to the computer it slows down because of this update settling itself on the tray.
I don't like the new IE9 because the silly thing doesn't have a menu bar.
Like the menu bar you can enable but was removed by default because most people turn it off to get more screen real-estate?0
