I think my service provider has made an error and given me 6 months free.. advice?

Hello,

I started a 24 month (ouch) contract way back in 2009, not really thinking long term as it was my first contract and I wanted a decent phone. Then around 10 months later I met my long-term partner and since we lived together at university, money was a little tighter than it had been living alone.

Therefore I placed my contract on hold for 6 months, told that I would have these 6 months added to the end of the contract length. Now I have just been on the phone to them, curious as to when I would be able to upgrade. The automated voice before the operator told me that my contract is ending very shortly, and this was confirmed by the operator, essentially meaning that the extra 6 months has NOT been added onto the contract length, meaning I literally just didn't get charged for the 6 months that my sim was deactivated / unused.

This is great news, as I've been dying to get out of it, however I just wanted to ask for some advice - if they do indeed honour the 30 day cancellation that I have now initiated, can they go back on their word if they realise the error they have made?

Why not say when your contract started and what the expected end date is?
Or maybe you were on 18 months in the first place - or maybe they want to charge the 6 months at end of contract.
On most contracts you can upgrade early, might be month 15 or 18 that you are allowed to upgrade.

i would have done the same as you, give them the notice and make sure the phone gets cut off/disconnected.
also make sure your final direct debit is paid, and then cancel the direct debit at the bank.
