£958 data roaming charges - please help!

Hi there,

I am in desperate need of help. I recently went to South Africa and Dubai for 3 weeks and have come back to a mobile phone bill of £958 (£917 of that data roaming).

I have used the phone for facebook and 1 or 2 other applications but i was not aware of the data roaming charges at all and that i had to turn the data roaming off - until now :(

I am desperate to speak to someone about this. I have a friend who is with 02 and apparently when this happened to her, she got a text from her service provider when she had reached £50 to notify her. I am with Orange and did not receive any notifications.

I have done a bit of research this morning and I found a link saying that the EU bought out a legislation that forces service providers to cap roaming data charges (£45) as of July 2010 - is this the case and please can someone advice me.

Please help someone!

That regulation applies within the EU.

Does it go by the location that the phone is being used or where it is being billed?

You were outside of the EU so that rule doesn't apply. Had you been roaming in an EU country then it does. It is where the phone is being used.

You'd better sort out a repayment plan and see if you can haggle it down a bit but you have no right to reduction or annulment of the charges.

BBC TV prog one guy did a similar thing forgot to disable the internet access.

They got his bill reduced but its not easy. Outside the EU as mentioned so thats one rule that
    does not apply.

So do you have a credit limit on the account? You should not be billed for anything greater than that.
Still may leave you with a large bill but not the full amount.

Hey, I did try set a limit with them years ago and it was a service that was not offered to me.

I will try and get it reduced - maybe by paying in full or begging :)

Will let you all know ...

It is surprising how many of my friends have had the same thing happen - but silly people never mentioned it ... grrrr - big lesson learnt here thats for sure!
  • Did you not receive a text from Orange as soon as you activated your phone on a roaming network? I'm sure when I do (with Orange), they send a text to inform you of the roaming charges of that country, happened to me a few weeks ago in Italy.

Nope, i didnt receive anything from Orange. My first stop was Dubai and i didnt get anything, then went onto South Africa, not a thing there either and then again back to Dubai.

I spoke to Orange accounts and they have reduced it from £958 to £218 because they said they could see it was done in error and they charged me "bundle" fees ....

I am one happy bunny again!
