The dropdown menu is greyed out

Have you tried updating the driver for your sound card? That may resolve it. If not then try here, scroll down to the section that is for XP. http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=Mixer_Toolbar_Issues Not a problem I've had, lucky I guess, like a previous poster I have a Creative SoundBlaster card. Hope that offers some help? good luck.

Doesn't really solve the problem but thanks
You aren't going to solve the problem either, you need a soundcard that has full duplex capability and the realtek you have (which are universally accepted as crap) isn't going to offer that.

Really not sure why anyone is trying to reinvent the wheel here.

OP needs one of THESE, and possibly one of THESE. Can then have two feeds. One for headphones, one to the line in on lappie. Real time noise in your ears this way.

The OP wants to hear what has been recorded, not what is going in.

    Evenin' all

Hoping one of you can help me with this.

I have a digital piano which I'm wanting to record from, via its audio out to my laptop audio/mic in.
I have installed Audacity and can record fine. All good but what I can't do is listen to the audio at the same time (pretty important when playing piano!)

I have done a bit of Googling on this but not managed to sort it.

If I double-click on volume button in taskbar and click 'mixer' there are no settings there referring to mic/audio in.

If I open up Realtek Acer HD audio manager and on the microphone tab, it's not showing as muted.

not sure where to go from here - very grateful for any suggestions/solutions!

    Cheers :)

I think you'll find you are incorrect killerwatt. If you played keyboard you would know that you need to hear what you are actually playing, but I accept that OP could be construed in a number of ways.:D
