Thanks Hammyman and Cit-k for your help.

I've listed it on Ebay - the listing is here just in case you have any comments! (I've sold lots of stuff on Ebay but never anything technical...)

    Thanks again!

The actual date you bought your laptop was 29/06/2008 according to when the warranty was activated with Dell if anyone asks.

Other than that, nice and simple and to the point. Might have a punt myself. I know a friend of mine will be interested.

Not sure on that model, but many dells have a plastic 'caddy' or end piece that hides the hole the drive slotted into

Please do include that as its a pain in the backside buying one without it, lol.

According to that, you've got the reinstallation cd, wipe the drive with dban, reinstall windows, and you'd get more money for it, with no risk of anyone getting the data

Make sure you include the HDD mounting/caddy, as it will be needed by the purchaser to put in their own HDD.
  • Thanks all!

I think I took out the caddy thing with the hard drive still attached and bashed the whole lot up in the garden... oops :o Sorry chaps.

I already tried to wipe the drive with DBAN but I couldn't make it do it for some reason. I'm normally fine with computers but it seemed really complicated. Now I can't install any programs as I can't browse the internet, as I deleted everything on C drive :o Sorry again!

If you hadn't bashed it up, you have the recovery CD to reinstall windows.

  • It won't install... Don't ask me why. The CD works but it can't find a location to install it, or something. This is why I'm selling it rather than spending hours trying to fix it as I simply don't have the knowledge. And I've listed it as faulty just in case it's irreparable.

PS to anyone who was interested in bidding, I've changed the auction duration from 5 to 3 days so I can send it straight away, as I'll be back at work next week and won't be able to get to a post office.

was that before you bashed it up or after?

  • I'm lost now!
I deleted everything I could off the C drive (programs, documents, everything). I took the hard drive out and bashed it. I put in the Windows CD into the (unbashed) laptop and it comes up as installing but then can't find a place to install itself. Probably to do with what I deleted.

If you've bashed it with a hammer or any force, it's all academic now, the platters may be in pieces.

Wiping the drive with any utility shouldn't stop windows from being able to reinstall from a windows recovery disc as supplied by the manufacturer, you may have to create a partition to install to first.

If the caddy and hard disk connector isn't bent, it would be much more use to the end user with these bits included.
