Car dealer forgot to take deposit

Hi folks
Thanks for all the replies, I sent a cheque off today to cover the deposit.
I felt, as some of you have said, that we had agreed the price and as I had already got some discounts and freebies thrown in I could not let the salesman get a rough time.
Thanks again.0 -
But instead you waited four weeks to send a cheque, why didn't you pay by card? It would have quicker. Did you want to punish the salesman further? The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0

I did not know about the missing deposit till 2 days ago, when my wife phoned them about something else, so I have not waited 4 weeks to send a cheque, just 2 days.
If they were that worried about the missing deposit they had over three weeks to get in touch with me, after all it was the salesman that forgot to mention and take the deposit. I could have dug my heels in and made it more difficult for them but I have decided against that.
Thank you for your kind words0 -

I bet the dealer's not bothered if it's card, cheque, or cash, so long as it's paid.0

The point is, it will take at least another week for it be received (probably posted second class), banked and cleared. Whereas a debit card is almost instant payment. I just get the impression that, as the OP was considering ilegally withholding the money in the first place (and then coming on here to ask if he can keep the money), he is doing it on purpose to "punish" the salesman and dealer. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
Flyboy,
You've made a few assumptions, some of which could well be right.
Had the OP refused to pay, practically, I don't think anything would have come of it.
Which is why the dealer will be grateful just to get the money, even if it takes a week or two.0 -

I am more concerned about the salesman job, than the dealers' loss of the interst on the money, to be honest. But just as concerned that he came here to obtain "permission" to hold onto money that wasn't his.The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0
