Cloves in oranges

Someone told me that if you stick cloves in oranges and leave them lying aound the house, you get a really nice Chrismassy smell.

But, does anyone know exactly what/how you do it? Don't the oranges go off and leave a horrible mess wherever they lay? How much of the oranges do you cover with cloves?

Anyone able to enlighten me?

you just stud the orange with the cloves, you dont peel the oranges ;)

you can also use cinnamon sticks / pine cones / essential oils to get some wonderful aromas into the home :)

in the ideal homes "complete guide to christmas" there are some lovely ,easy ideas :)

i've tried these they are nice, not the real smell of christmas though,
and yes they will probably leave a horrible mess if you leave them there long enough :rotfl: :rotfl:

Just make sure you do it as the instructions say! I did it a couple of months ago and left them on radiators thinking this would dry them. It did but I ended up with these small black flies starting to appear all over my house!!  It turns out they were Fruit fly and were from my oranges:( They were everywhere! I had to go around and dispose of all of them as I didn't know what one had caused the problem. It took me about 2 weeks to get rid of all the flies from my house. I am happy to say I am now a fly free and orange free home;)

on the 'this morning' prog yesterday, Colin and Justin did the orange/clove thing and thought was a great idea but did not realise you have to do it a month ago for them to shrink!!
Is it too late to do it now then? xxx

It depends. If you want them to keep for several years it might be a bit late. I didn't know you keep them so I have made new ones every year and they usually keep from 1st Dec till new year. I just tie a string around them as per instructions and put the cloves in a pattern I fancy and hang them up. So far none have gone moldy on me but then I usually throw them away after a month.
