Branston Beans - How Many in a Tin?

I may be mistaken but it seems to me that there are less baked beans in Branston tins and more tomato sauce than there used to be.

I have been under that impression for a few weeks now, but today I opened one and the beans were not apparent until about 0,75 inches down the tin. It initially looked like a tin of tomato sauce. When I probed further, it was not that the beans were packed in a solid mass at the bottom with the sauce gathered on top - it genuinely seemed that the tin was under-beaned! I have had that feeling about this brand for some time now - which is a pity as I prefer them to Heinz.

Presumably, if there are less beans, this will be because tomato sauce is cheaper than beans. Varying the bean content will change the production costs and maintain a level retail price. Maybe this is why they have moved on to paper labels on the tins instead of printed tins, too - more easy to change the table of contents list.

On the side of the tin, the table of contents say that 53% of the content is beans, but I don't know what the content of a tin from, say, 6 months ago was.

Has anyone else noticed this?

  • Looking at ingredients list published in old product reviews from 2006-2010 it's the tomato content which varies between...
Beans (50%), tomatoes (40%), water, sugar, modified maize starch, salt, paprika, ground white pepper, flavouring, spices
    &
Beans (50%) Tomatoes (30%) Water, Sugar, Modified Maize Starch, Salt, Paprika, Ground white pepper, Flavouring, Spices.
Looking at ingredients lists on current supermarket sites the bean content seems to vary between 50% & 53% according to whether you buy a single tin or a multipack.
The branston website is a little vague on the subject as they don't list percentages at all but you could contact them to enquire about changes to the recipe if you wanted to.

Try storing them upside down then turn the right way up when you open them.
The tin I used on the weekend seemed to be packed with beans and very little sauce so I put some butter in there.

it may say 50% on the label.

This may vary on individual tin due to the mix not being homogenous.

I would like to think the bean makers do wash out tests.

But if you got lack of beans, there is probably a tin with more than 50% bean some where else.

I am not sure if this happens with beans. 50% of the ingredient dec will be ingoing bean weight. Some of the moisture from the beans may have leached out into the tomato sauce making the weight seem lower than 50%.

However I think you just have a had tin.

It may be a genuine packing mistake.

Why don't you write a letter of complaint, and you may get a voucher out of them ;)
