Its just like a couple wanting to move to a property, and the guy saying, As I am the one paying all the rent, I just want myself to be on the tenancy, it don't work like that.

Actually, if the other spouse does not work and has 0 income it makes no difference to the landlord.
For a landlord the point of having someone down as a tenant is to be able to go after him for money in case of rent unpaid or damages.

But in general, Everyone over 18 working or not should be referenced and be on the Tenancy agreement.

    In general, why?

No, they do check for credit history.

JJlandlord: you are picking on words now then, take away 'in general'.

Everyone over 18 working or not should be referenced and be on the Tenancy agreement.

Viola Lass: it doesn't matter whose paying the rent...
The main benefit to the LL in having all adult occupants on the tenancy agreements is so that they all have J&SL under the one tenancy agreement. However, it's not of much benefit if the adult kids are in education and have no independent funds anyway. It's perfectly possible for other occupants to simply be "permitted occupiers"

It *can* , but clearly it's dependent on what both LL and T agree between them.

When my then boyfriend moved into my flat, he was a 'permitted occupier' named on the tenancy but not a tenant and not responsible for paying the rent (even though he was over 18 and had a job). The agents and I agreed that there was no need for credit checks etc when my salary could cover the rent, even though we did actually split it.

As tbs624 has pointed out, it would be silly to credit check a young person who is still in education and has no income. All the landlord needs is someone they can run after if the rent is not paid and they've got that in the OP.

Then my question stands even more: Why?

As I had said earlier, everything is at the discretion of the landlord/agent

As you seem to be ducking my question, I should conclude that your claim is not backed by any factual reason.

Yes, I think you're right. I read that thread too - an Experian representative posted that landlords/agencies can view CCJs and bankruptcies only (i.e. the public information) - they can't view your payment history with other lenders (e.g. late/missed payments).
