. My mam was outraged when I told her how much it cost and she said it had shot up since she's bottle fed me and my sister. It was 26 years ago mother, did you really think it'd cost the same?!

Totally sounds like my mum....."how much  " at pretty much everything lol

How old is your baby? the first milks which are from birth can't be reduced/ on sale etc (EU ruling) but the follow on milks from 6 months can (ie the buy 3 for 2 in Boots) if he's over 6 months it may be worth changing for price, I know once my son finishes the current tin (am mixed feeding so a tin does last me ages) I'll get the follow on stuff

Ds is 6 months today, and I tragically got quite excited that once this lot I have bought is used, I could go over to follow on :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: Would rather he was eating a bit better first though :D
  • I think the prices are so high on the first milks compared to others because companies aren't allowed to promote, discount or do offers/bogofs on "first stage" formula milks, unlike follow on milk where they can.

How much is Aptamil these days? I seem to recall it was around the £7 mark in 2004 when my 3rd was tiny. The cost was part of the reason I switched to breastfeeding for our 4th and 5th babies! (Well that and the fact I absolutely hated sterilising and having to warm bottles at 2am :p;) ... me, lazy? Never :rotfl:)

Are clinics not allowed to sell it anymore? I never knew that.

Managed to get 4 Huge tins of SMA follow on milk the red tin at the end of the asda baby event for £4 but I think its finished now, probably enough to last till he is 10-11 months. I can't see the follow on milk going up by that much, more likely the company just aren't selling it for cheap anymore.

We have them out in force up here, had the HV pretty much tell me I was a failure and the BF support worker out three times to try to get me start again. Doesn't seem to register with them my son won't take my breast and screams blue murder when I tried x

OP have you tried the cartons as well? We get 12 for £4.97, usually for the night feeds x

That's terrible vroom, I can't believe they're been so harsh with you! The morning I had my baby I tried to BF but it just didn't happen. I'd been awake nearly 48 hours, had a pretty traumatic labour and when I asked for a bottle the midwife just said "you do realise we'll give you as much help as possible if you want to keep trying BF?". I told her I understood that but I still wanted a bottle which she gave me straight away and reassured me that BF doesn't "work" sometimes and only I could decide what was best for my baby. I've found I've had nothing but support about my decision and have certainly not been made to feel guilty about "giving up"!

Anyway, sorry OP for hijacking the thread!x

We buy Aptamil and we have found its cheapest in Wilkinson and most expensive in the Co-Op.

Thankfully we get Healthy Start vouchers so they lower the price for us :)

Just my 2 penneth worth on this. The wife has just returned from Morrisons and SMA follow on, red top, is now £8.37 from £7.70 ish at Asda, Sainsbury and Tesco's online prices.

She's complained and asked for a manager to call back with an explanation as to why they are so high.

I don't think baby milk prices are regulated. So many people are dependant on them and its not as if mums can re-lactate a few months down the line.

If prices were regulated it would contradict the laws on first baby milks and the push for breastfeeding by the NHS and WHO.

Its a double edge sword, if prices are kept high more mums might make a bigger effort to breastfeed....if they're not regulated the ones who dont/cant breastfeed can find a huge portion of their food budget going on formula and face difficulties.

I think about £25 -£30 a month is average for a baby, just imagine twins or triplets:eek:

I have never heard of drs giving prescription for soy baby milk

Yes, if the baby can't take normal formula.

I mostly b/f DS2, but I also wanted him to have some formula milk so that his dad could feed him. (I never was able to express more than an ounce or so.)

I tried every one but he projectile vomited them. When I spoke to the doctor, he said to try baby soya milk and that I could get it on prescription.

Son was able to drink the soya milk.
