Billy Joel, the singer was once asked how he kept hold of his money. He said I hire one lawyer to watch my money then I hire another lawyer to watch the first lawyer.

Whilst getting professional advice can be daunting - will they be any good, will they confuse me etc etc
The advice for the board is right - if you try and do this yourself you are asking for trouble. Yes their are some good lay investors but they tend to be very well read and researched they are also lots who get taken in by latest fad in investments and do badly

I should also point out that on your size of fund most investment advisers could take their fees and still get you a better deal than you can get doing it yourself as we can get discounts you cant

If you use the website unbiased.co.uk you can choose to select advisers that have advanced qualifications in investment - look at their websites then go and see a couple you like the sound of

There are some good advisers out there - although still a few rogues and a few idiots. It will be less work and less cost to identify a good one than to try and become an expert yourself

    Good luck
    Ian

    Yup, I agree
I also always find it instructive and interesting to look at all the poster's earlier posts on MSE through the 'find other posts by this user' facility.

SPEAK TO AN IFA OR AND TAX PLANNER.

If you are on 5k a month and single you have some serious tax / IHT concerns.

And to the person who said IFA's have no knowledge please try sitting the R06 paper and then let me know your mark
