Balcony Gardening!

Hi everyone

We live in a flat so are stuck with our balcony for our gardening (both flowers and veggies) - allotments are rarer than hen's teeth here in east London!

We've covered the balcony floor with our plants but i would really like to have some of those planters which hang over the balcony railings. I've seen them in other flats, but never seen them for sale.

I don't want to pay an arm & a leg, so if anyone knows where I can get somehtiing to hang over the railing to plant veggies or flowers in for a reasonable price I'd be very grateful!

Many thanks,
Rich

It would be really easy to make your own, if the types you talk about are pricey

There's a flat near me that I pass that uses butchers hooks with brightly painted old paint tubs hanging from them, looks lovely every year.

Not cheap but less likely to fall if you're as inept at DIY as me:

Like the butchers hook and paint pot idea --- what do they do; just hang the paint pot by the handle from the hook? I'd be worried it wouldn't be quite strong enough...

yep, never seen one fall off, they have all railings around and they hang them facing inwards, but the plants follow the sun so grow out towards it.
    Looks really nice.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I used to garden on balconies. :) Its very rewarding....may I suggest a look at Italian balcony ieas to see ow much more its possible to get out of a balcony space than we do in uk?

My only bit of advise is to think carefully about hanging stuff off the outside. Primarily because of watering and how this will impact on your downstairs neighbours. we tried but we couldn't find a solution that didn;t give our neighbours problems with water and sometimes compost on their balcony. :)

thanks everyone, lots of ideas there.

We are actually 1st floor so no lower neighbours! And if we do drop compost we go downstairs and clean it up, nice to be a good neighbour like.
