Is there any such thing as a PAYG dongle?

With all the ones I have found the credit expires after a month or some other short period

That is indeed all you can get now unless you buy 3 or 12 month ones.

I don't know if it's changed, but a while ago I had an 02 pre-pay dongle, and you just paid so much at the beginning of the month for so many days (eg £15 for 30days) but if you exceeded a certain download limit then you had to start again. I found it hard to go over their download limit by just browsing though.

I heard that Vodaphone's dongle is loaded with £X, then you use it when you need it and it doesn't run out by a certain number of days, it's about usage.

Having said that, things do change all the time so that might not be true any more. But at the time I was looking (a year ago), Vodaphone were the only one that seemed to do it.

Okay just done some looking for you and this is what I found. However I would always recommend checking what the coverage is like in the areas in which you are most likely to be using it. Last thing you want to do is spend £30 on a dongle and then find you have no signal in the one place you want to use it most.

    Vodafone - http://www.vodafone.co.uk/personal/mobile-internet/on-your-pc-or-mac/internet-dongles/index.htm
    T-Mobile - http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/mobile-broadband/usb-stick/

I don't think I missed any providers out, but it's easy enough to google if you need to. Most of the websites have a signal checker, but any decent store should (or can if you ask) check this before you buy.

We have a Vodafone dongle which we got through Amazon a couple of tears ago and it looks like they are still available.

It was about £29 for the dongle including initial credit and you can top up online when it starts to run low. No expiry!

We chose this because we just wanted to check e-mails and news while we were away and didn't want to pay the high charges for access at the hotels we were staying at. It has been absolutely perfect for our needs.

This is exactly what I want but it doesn't seem to be available any more

This would also be perfect for our needs but sadly it's no longer available

You can still get them on ebay although they tend to go for about 50 pounds - so 35 for the dongle and 15 pounds credit.
