Thank you taffy056. I will make sure to the transfer "the fine" in my name untouched then will apply the ignore route.

The only thing that worries me is that the car rental company will most likely have designated me as the driver..

What would worry me more would be the possibility of the car rental company just paying the fake PCN and charging you about £40 admin fee on top. Every time the PPC send out a letter to the car rental company there's a danger of it. Seen it loads of times posted on forums and it's very likely the PPC will keep writing to the hire co because they know they are often an easy touch after a threatogram or two.

I would be very proactive and write, snail mail (not a phone call) to the car rental firm now to say it's not even a parking ticket and you will absolutely not be reimbursing them if they fall for the scam (do call it a scam). Give them this Fleet News link:

    http://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/2009/5/28/question-private-parking-fines-fleets-urged/30698/

And firstly check your car hire t&cs, what does it say about private parking charges? Nothing usually. It often talks about fines and penalties from 'authorities' but a PPC fake PCN is none of these - point that out, crystal clear. They have zero liability and it's NOT the same as a real PCN at all.

Tell them before you end up out of pocket, as I assume they have your credit card authority from the hire forms? They'll very likely just debit the amount plus admin fee if you don't cover your back fully now.
PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

  • Thank you, they are not usual car rental, it is London CarClub - they have clearly indicated that they will get the "fine" re-issued in my name and that it is then up to me to do what I want with it. Looks like I should be fine then.

    Cheers, Coupon-mad
