hi there,

just a daft quick question,

when i was 17 i got my provisional licence, i never carried on with my lessons or did my tests but now im ready to ive chosen my instuctor and booked some lessons for next week,

only thing is i havnt got the counterpart that comes with the provisional, i must have lost it,

so my question is can i still go ahead with the lessons with only the photocard part of my licence untill the replacement comes in the post?

ive found this link to pay £20 for a replacement

If your instructor ask you to produce a licence before you drive you can't as a driving licence is made up of both parts.

I would expect that the driving instructor would not be willing to. The counter part shows endorsements that you have, with out it he does not know if you are banned. Ring them and check.

How old is your licence they only last 10 years now.

With it he can't be 100% sure you're not.

i had a couple of lessons at 17 and thats it never drove since, never had any endorsements or anything,

i`ll give the instuctor a ring to check,
might have to re-arrange untill ive got both parts,

He is taking a risk, then.
AFAIK if you are banned from driving for 6 weeks or less, then you do not have to physically return your licence,. Instead, the disqualification will be marked on the counterpart and both parts given back to you.
So someone could present a legally held photocard but could still be disqualified.

Obviously there is still a risk that someone could be disqualified but presents an old counterpart that they have told DVLA they have lost; but at least in that case the instructor would have done everything reasonable to check they had a licence.

Make sure you contact your instructor and check first otherwise you could end up paying for lesson that you can't do.

On the one hand, that sounds like good news for your son who can start lessons straight away without delay.

On the other hand, if an instructor is lax with basic checks, how many other things - including critical driver errors - will slip by him unnoticed?

The best instructors out there are the ones who have an impeccable attention to detail.
