Savoury nibbles!

I love this site and am trying very hard to become more OS although my husband is the original 'anti-Old-Styler' as money just seems to burn a hole in his pocket which makes it difficult!
I just wondered if anyone had any tips for savoury items I could bake for snacks etc. I have used a couple of the recipes from here like Twinks hobnobs which are lovely but fundamentally we are both savoury people and I find we waste a lot of money on buying things like crisps, which are also so unhealthy.
The only things I have tried are HM sausage rolls and HM scotch eggs- both nice but require meat so not very cheap (or healthy)!
Thanks!0 -

Some ideas for you:
Cheese Straws - I haven't made them but people on here have mentioned them so bound to be a recipe somewhere
Vegetable Crisps - not strictly the "baking" you were after but you say you like crips. Again, not made them myself but have seen the odd recipe on here.
Scones with savoury flavours like cheese, seeds, herbs
Savoury biscuits - just the usual basic biscuit recipe omitting sugar and adding flavours like the ones above
Popcorn tossed in spices, rice cakes, crackers, carrot sticks and celery are all savoury snacks we like in our house.Love and compassion to all x0 -
Thanks both-some great ideas- should have thought of looking under party snacks!
Boodle- which spices do you put on your popcorn- we make popcorn sometimes but can never think of anythng more inventive than salt!0 -
MrsM has a recipe somewhere for savoury breadsticks which are very moreish and an ideal snack instead of crisps, nuts etc.
Here it is:
The bread sticks are :-- 150ml warm water
- 1/2tsp dried yeast - i use 7g of fresh
- pinch of sugar
- 225g plain flour
- 1tsp salt
- 2 tsp caraway seeds
roll into long sausages -about 12" and place on a greased baking sheet -i use a non stick liner.. and wang in the oven at 220c/425f/gas7 for 10-12 mins
When you are rolling them out you do need some flour but try not to use to much as they just slide about :rotfl:
when they are first made they are slightly chewy but When mine are cooled i keep the wrapped up in a clean tea towel so they stay crispy..a bit like grissinis ...only nicer...I have altered what seeds i use before...
I have done them with poppy seeds too, without the caraway seeds and with 10g parmesan and 1 tsp of mustard seeds - they are rather nice.. and with poppy seeds
Hubby munches them all week -much better than the salted peanuts he used to demolishand lovely with tzatziki and dips mmmmmmm
Thanks to MrsMcawber and taken from HERE
I do a variation without the caraway seeds, I add about 20g parmesan instead and they are yumm!!
