Windows Server 2003 not connecting internet

Hi,

I'm new to the whole server thing, but thought I'd give it a go.

I've just installed windows server 2003. I want the server to host files and media for the rest of my network.

I've connected the server to the router as you would expect. Also connected to the router are my windows 7 pc, a windows xp pc, and remotely a windows xp laptop.

From the server I can easily ping the router (and even log on to it via internet explorer) and I can ping the other computers but not the internet eg google.com or 209.85.143.99.

I do not have windows firewall running on the server (just incase that was the problem - but intend to configure that once I get things running properly)

From the other computers I can ping the router, ping the server and ping the internet eg google.com 209.85.143.99

From the other computers I can easily access the directories I've made available as planned - I haven't started the media streaming yet! So fun and games still to come.

My problem is why I can't get beyond my router from the server - main reason I want to is to get the windows updates! Though I would probably like to get an alternative web browser too.

In addition so far I've also failed to gain access to my windows 7 PC from the server - so any pointers on that front would also be appreciated. [I'm completely new to this so you can't talk too basic to me] To get to the server files from windows 7 I just clicked "computer" then there was an option for "network" and the server was there by the name I gave it. From the server, "my computer" doesn't have a "my network" option. [If I go to add a printer, network printer, I can see my windows 7 computer as a possible source of network printer]

----

A few more details: Because this could potentially be the whole problem. When I first installed windows 2003 the internet worked. Then I clicked "configure my server" selected default option. Then internet stopped working. I went back to "configure my server" unselected everything it had done by default - eg DNS server etc and instead chose the options I wanted - file server, media server and clicked OK. Still no internet. It seems that something went wrong when installing the default options, and that uninstalling them didn't fix it.

Do an IPconfig /all and post the log up

Is your server setup for DHCP, unless you specifically configured it as a domain controller it will obtain IP via DHCP when first installed then you configure it with static IP when setup as such. It could be using an old IP or manual IP addy.

Also, drivers? Which ones are you using?

Is it a dell server - you can download the dell update cd from their website, it rules :)

    ipconfig /all reads

    Host Name ser***
    Primary DNs Suffix ***
    Node Type Broadcast
    IP Routing enabled ***
    WINS proxy enabled ***
    DNS suffic Search List ***

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
    Connection-specific DNS Suffix
Description: Compaq NC7131 Gigabit Server Adapter
    Physical Address: **
    DHCP enabled: No
    IP address ***
    Subnet mask ***
    Default Gateway
    DNS Servers ***

Note: This is clearly not right, there is not such thing as laurel.local, yesterday did try entering a command which changed the default gateway to 192.168.*** as it should be but this didn't change anything (and today it is back to blank).

I haven't put them on a domain to my knowledge. I just wanted them to work:( (which I guess implies I don't know what a domain is, how to put things on them, or the benefits of doing so).

    ***
    ***
    *** Now removed as working.

It is a Compaq. But even if it was a dell I can't get online;) though I suppose I could download it elsewhere - now I see your point.

The server is configured to use the DNS server role that you uninstalled. Change the DNS servers to the same one as your other machines. you can change the dns server addresses by following this guide (same process for WS2003, even though guide is for XP). Also change the default gateway to the address of your router.

Fantastic. You've done it. I could not remember how to change those properties. You're a star and I can now get on line from the server. Now I guess I need to start working on the firewall etc.

Edit: Oh and I don't suppose you have any quick suggestions on how to view the shared files on my windows 7 PC? Don't worry if you don't, I'm already chuffed to bits. Thanks

One quick tip, avoid the Win 7 Homegroup, use the regular file sharing.

That is another problem. Firstly the server doesn't have a dvd drive. Secondly the server will not boot from a usb drive. Thirdly, when I tried using the usb after installing 2003 I get the error an error message along the lines of "this is an executable file but not for this type of computer" which has me even more confused.

My next attempt (once I've mastered accessing windows 7 pc) would be to try and run it from the dvd drive on the windows 7 pc - no idea if this will work (or just kill everything).

Have yet to try and mount the 2008 disk locally on the server.

I don't even know if 2008 will work at all on an old server, but will try again another day when I have more time and don't need to go to bed. In the meantime please continue to post to this thread I will check periodically and will always thank.

    Thanks all.
