Which Norton? if you have the Internet Security as well as Safeguard security then I reckon you have at least one too many firewalls installed. You should only have one software firewall otherwise you end up with conflicts similar to the problem you're having. Do you actually know what specific security applications you have installed?

If Norton is running ok I'd recommend getting rid of any other security suites (I'm not a Norton supporter normally but if it's working, what the hell.. - the only Safeguard I've come across is a hefty commercial suite which may well be conflicting with Norton so you need to sort out which is doing what...
Check the security section of Windows, in Control panel, to make sure that Norton is handling the firewall options.

Just another thought, it is only the AVG antispyware you have, not the whole suite? Also, if you have the latest version of Norton, that has an antispyware built in anyway which would negate the usefulness of AVG..

  • OK, just try disabling the Norton firewall temporarily to see if you can connect - re-enable it as soon as you've tried. If it updates without Norton running then you need to configure Norton to allow it. If it still doesn't update then check that other programs are updating - Spyware Doctor & Norton itself, for example.
