Contacts on Android smartphone

I sync my phonebook on my Android 2.1 phone then log into Googlemail on my PC which then allows me to edit my phone book on the computer rather than on the fiddly android phone..... I had similar duplicate issues when putting in a SIM from an old non smart phone that stored contacts in a weird way, seemed to create duplicates some starting with surname and some not....when you're done editing then sync the phone again and the edited phone contacts get put onto the phone and it's much easier to edit on a computer than a phone, I think.
I don't use Googlemail account for anything other than editing my android phonebook and buying the odd app.
