BT broadband cancellation charges

Hi all
I was hoping someone would be able to give me some advice.
I moved house recently and when I contacted BT to let them know they said they checked my account and I was paying too much (nice of them to let me know after a year). The woman said that she could give me a great deal etc. etc. the usual stories and I took this new telephone line and broadband package which is much cheaper than the one I was on.
The telephone line was installed on Friday 15 April and the broadband was due to be installed on Monday 18 April - for some reason I suddenly had a horrible feeling they had put me in a contract so I contacted them on Sunday 17 April and lo and behold they had entered me into a 12 month contract - they all claimed that the woman should have told me etc. etc. I didn't want to be tied into a contract so I told them to cancel it.
I got through to about 20 different departments and had to explain my situation to them all over again - finally I got through to someone who said she would cancel it but I needed to contact them again in 24 hours to confirm. I said to her I didn't mind paying for the cancellation fee of my telephone line since it had already been installed but I wasn't willing to pay for the broadband as it hadn't been installed yet. I asked her if I was going to be charged for broadband cancellation and she said no. I asked her to 100% confirm and she confirmed I wouldn't pay anything for the broadband cancellation.
I then rang 24 hours like she told me to and the woman I spoke to said she doesn't know why the other woman asked me to call 24 hours after. She then told me that my broadband was being cancelled but I would now have to pay £30 cancellation charge.
I know they record their telephone conversations and I could take it up with them but does anyone know if its worth it? It is actually going to help or are they just going to make some excuse? I have told them to cancel everything of mine and to never contact me again because their service is terrible but it just gets under my skin when I think about it - I haven't paid them because they owe me money from my last bill, but they are paying me £30 less because of these cancellation charges for the broadband.
Sorry for the long post I just wanted to make sure I got everything!

If you cancel your broadband without using a MAC ( to transfer to another provider) you will pay a cancellation charge.
In circumstances where you move to another ISP the new ISP picks up the charge. That gum you like is coming back in style.0
