We had this discussion on our freecycle group and it was overwhelmingly voted as a big no no, but it is accepted that there will be some who will do it so it is asked that they declare it.

I don't agree with selling something that someone gave you in good heart thinking you needed it.
  • Why don't you go the whole hog and tell your local shelter you're homeless. They'll probably give you a donated christmas box and you could sell its contents on Ebay. You'd only be depriving a needy person who has nothing.

morally wrong no doubt. I have all but given up on freecycle now - most of the ads are now "WANTED" and for things like digital cameras, laptops and so forth. Someone was even asking for a motorbike!

It was a brilliant concept, I gave a fair few bits away and took a pile of unwanted books & magazines but it's been spoiled by the parasites now.

I tend to use freecycle to save me a trip to the tip or worse arguing over pennies at a boot sale.
If someone is enterprising and can see value in things I dont want why not let them sell it. The money might be more usefull to them than the thing after all.

So I am considering taking stuff off of freecycle and selling it on ebay.

I have two questions.... firstly is this morally wrong? secondly is their money to be made?

    Thanks!
I think your second question goes to show that you will just ignore what responses you get to the first one.
people, myself included give to people on freecycle to use (for themselves) something i no longer need but has use left in it.
People like yourself who intend to make a fast buck out of someone elses generosity and kindness to their fellow man is completely against the spirit of Freecycle.
I for one would stop freecycling if I found someone was selling what I was led to beleive they genuinely needed.

    Bad Bad Bad Idea!!!
This time next year Rodney... :D
  • i personally dont think its right to sell stuff that has been offered or asked for on freecycle or any other website similar to freecycle.....

as its been given in good faith... that it is going to be used by the person....

but on saying that...... in my experience ....the items that i have had from the freecycle site....( except for one ) have been totally naff... a dodge fridge that neally burned my kitchen down.....a dead trantula......and a boot full of toys that went straigh to the tip.....

i feel some peeps just advertise on the freecycle site to save them the hassle of taking them to the tip...as the items have def.... come to the end of their us

Disgracefull.. there are peep who gen need those items!

Theres a difference between money saving and moneygrabbing!

The very fact you even ask if there's money to be made shows you intend to ignore this forum's response and try and sell stuff that GENUINE people have been generous enough to give for free..on the basis it will be of benefit to another person in a practical way.

The only benefit you're looking for is money.............which in my opinion puts you about as morally bankrupt as they come.

I stopped putting stuff on Freecycle because of creeps who look to make money out of it..................

    Just MHO
if i had known then what i know now
  • i am afraid i agree with everyone else.

i too run a freecycle group, and i have asked everyone to be honest with their intentions of the items offered.

i do also get wary of where my items are going, so i do sometimes check out the prices on ebay first, if they go for an amount of money, they go to the chairty shop, so someone can pay them for it, and the chairty gets some money.

but if it is something that would not make much money, then it will be offered to the group,

but i always ask their intentions...........and that is coming from a moderator !!!!!

bad way to look at it i know, but people can sometimes be as nice as pie, when they see those ££££ signs.

so no, i dont think you should take stuff to resell.
the more people i meet!! the more i like my dog !!;)
