Windows media player? Pop your CD in.. XP asks you what you want to do. Select "Rip music from CD". Done. It doesn't get much easier than that.
Also automatically downloads the album art, so that you can recognise your CD collection by the covers.

The only thing that you would need to do on your first 'rip' is to change the default from Windows Media Audio(wma) to MP3.

I know a lot of you hate Microsoft, but you need to think about the kind of advice that you give in relation to the request.

all depends on your final use for the rip. i hate WMP with avengance but i have finally figured out how to make it send my album art to my MP3 player so i,m sticking with it for fear of rocking the boat.

it can make transferring media to a portable player hair pulling frustrating though, thank god for drag and drop
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:

Don't be so defensive (or patronising !) - I don't hate microsoft I just don't use WMP. I find it to be jack of all trades master of none.If you like WMP then you use it !

In terms of the advice given surely the OP has exactly what they are looking - for a variety of options.

I also use AudioGrabber. Dead easy to use, produces great quality MP3s.
Of course, I may just be talking b****cks!

Take it easy now. You wrote that you wouldn't have a clue how to start ripping a CD with WMP. So, I explained.

Instead of thanking me, you berate me.
Clearly, you are not interested in finding out how simple WMP is for the purposes of 'ripping'.
So, you attack on WMP appears without foundation.

    Each to his own.

In fact, in addition to WMP, I have dbPowerAmp, Easy CD-DA Extractor, Exact Audio Copy and Real Player with Harmony Technology.

I use WMP for 'ripping' my .wma tracks as I can have better quality at a lower bitrate. EAC for damaged discs etc

Anyway, whatever helps you through the day...

With WMA! Eww. AAC if you're doing lower bitrates and Ogg if higher bitrates. Mp3 for compatibility.

My MP3 player plays MP3 and WMA. That's it.
I also have CD players that can play mp3 and .wma.

You need to think about compatibility.

    Ah ok fair point.

I personally don't use AAC or WMA. I use Ogg Vorbis which isn't hugely supported (although neither is WMA really), but I like to help the open source initiative.
