[Just noticed that the OP was 2011, so a bit unlikely!]

Seems some people search too hard, instead of starting a new thread.....

And how does this prove that I agreed to this (that was what you said)?
But surely it doesn't need to, because:What I agreed to was Nationwide T&C that said nothing about my card details being given to third parties without my consent.
is answered by my post where I quoted the NW T+C:
"If we change your credit card number and/or expiry date we will notify the card scheme provider. "
isn't that consent?0 -
Yes, it's pretty obvious that the card scheme provider (i.e. Visa) has to know my card details to process transactions. No way does this mean that I agreed to Visa spreading my card details all over the world to other companies.
It's not that I am saying that this is right or wrong. My point is that I have never agreed to this despite dalesrider claiming that I had.0 -
OK, roger that.0

But they are only passing it to companies you have a relationship with.

To anybody reading this thread.
If you are unhappy with the way VISA operates just send the cards back to the bank saying why you are doing so.
To everyone else just carry on with life which is made a whole job easier with VISA and Mastercard.
Think back to how you would pay for things before credit and debit cards????
In today's world it is unthinkable but if you want to send cheques and postal orders to retailers who will still accept them good for you.0 -

Secondly, they cannot check the current state of the relationship. They are passing the details to the companies that I had relationship with in the past (does Visa really check this?) and that claim that I still have a relationship with them.0 -

Your card details (eg new expiry date or even the very fact you still hold the card) are passed:
1) from CC to network
2) network to merchant
As it is personal data, you must consent to both transfers. In the case of 1), that is in the card agreement. In the case of 2), it must be in the agreement with the merchant. Ie when you sign up for the service, you consent for them obtaining your updated details. It should be in their T+Cs. If it isn't, then I don't think they have the right to obtain the data, even if you agreed to a CPA. Assuming you didn't consent to 2), then I don't think the CC or the network is on the hook because they would, no doubt, have some sort of assurance from the merchant that permission has been obtained from you before the request is made. But they would be under some duty to monitor compliance.0
