House of Cutler - I would add that if a meter reader has been to your house to read the meter andEDF have not used the reading supplied by the meter reader, that is not your fault.

The meter reader should at least have noted on their hand-held machine that the database had the wrong information (ie: that you had a metric and not an imperial meter). This is extremely easy for a meter-reader to spot, I can assure you!. EDF should then have investigated this coment input by the meter-reader.

I would add that meter-readers get bonuses dependant upon their access rate )percentage of meter readings obtained as aginst total meters to read on a route) and/or the number of meter readings they obtain. Many do not consider it in their interests to investigate this serious problem as much as they should.
In short, really tou have EDF by the short and curlies. Do not pay this incorrect bill even if EDF demand this money from you!

Actually after finding all this out my Girlfriend said that there have been at least 2 meter readers come round and say that they have a different (serial) no for the meter and that tehy would get it updated on the system. This obviously didn't happen.

The serial number on my bill is noth8ing like the one on my actual meter.

In answer to some other questions:

    • The meter has not been changed since I have been living in the property.
    • All the bills are in cubic feet and I have just done a quick calculation to confirm that they are charging me at 32KWH per unit

I am currently in EDFs queuing system waiting to speak to them

Is this a sticker on the meter House of Cutler? Has this been competed with details of a meter change?

If so, it may well be a good idea to take a pictire of the meter and this sticker. That can be used to help prove to EDF that they have the wrong details. It certainly looks like your bill is far too high.
  • Latest update:

EDF didn't actually try to argue with me even before I had the extra details (which was nice) they did ask me to get the details from the sticker though. Went back to my old house again to get all the details.

    Meter owner: OnStream
    Date of change: 26/04/2005 !

EDF said something about OnStream not having the same system as the national grid and this is why the records are often wrong?

Anyway they guy on the phone did a rough calculation and said I may be due a £400 rebate. Result!

Will have to wait about a month for the official new manual bill but that's OK.

I have now told everyone I know to check their meters just in case.

£850 bill to £400 rebate is a 'result'!

How long were you in the other house? Whoever was in the house since the meter change in April 2005 will probably been overcharged in kWhs consumed! - by a factor of 2.83!!

In the old days only NG installed and changed meters and they provided the meter details to suppliers. Now there are multiple gas meter installers but the central register should still get updated in the same way. The problem is if the incumbent supplier fails to process the exchange and notify the central register then the register will remain out of line until someone spots the issue.

This is why (on this site) people are always advised to check (a) meter readings and (b) meter serial numbers on every gas/elec bill.

From July 2009 till April 2011

    22 Months

Generally paying £60 a month for most of it

Can't do anything about the people at my house before me, although from the amount of mail and people chasing them after they moved out I don't think they paid all their bills anyway, but I have left a note for the new tenants ensuring they check their new supplier charges them correctly.
