started taking it out with a thin screwdriver blade hammered down into it, it chewed up and basically I'm digging out softish plastic.

I'm getting a bit nervous because I would rather have a special needle nosed picking tool, and an M8 tap to clean out the thread both of which I have at a different address. I don't want to dig too much/anymore at this address as I may not have any success or may damage the thread and will probably be unable to replug the hole with the screw to allow me to drive the car. So I stopped working & refitted the screw. Drove to get LPG filled to test the screw is still water tight - it is.

Will have another go tomorrow with the better tools.

    The last two pictures here:

show the top bit can be removed away from the water pump house. I think I'll do that as it will be easier to work on and won't get bits of plastic dropping into the water pump and then fit a new gasket.
I may have to fit the old gasket back on with a bit of silcone for now if I can't get a new gasket.

But this should make the whole job a lot easier, and pretty much guaranteed to be a success.

I guess those two top bolts will be something like 8Nm?

Going to France on the ferry tonight.....

Vauxhall doesn't sell the replacement gasket, it is shown on the diagram but they don't do it.

Then I discovered that on my engine there is no removable plate (as shown in those pictures) anyway!!!

So I started with an easyout but it just squished the plastic up instead of turning it out. So I started to pick it out with a needle, and try to stop bits from falling inside. I think quite a few crumbs went inside and possibly the big end bit may have fallen off. hopefully not going to cause any problems later on.

Then I cleaned it out with the M8 tap and that removed what was remaining.

£10 bit went straight in with a bit of gasket seal just to be sure.

Fingers crossed we're off to France. :)
