Hi I had messages popping up saying comp was infected and trying to get me to buy xp antivirus 2011. As we have XP I didnt think I had to pay for any upgrade etc. When I went to firewall through control panel it said it was turned off. I had microsoft security essentials which was saying protected.
I did system restore to Tues then tried to download free avast but it kept saying choose program you want to open it with and I didnt know what to do. I've turned off and rebooted and now i can't get on anything, word and excel just says application not found and microsoft sec essentials says choose the file to open. Its never done that before what is going on?
Please help!!!!

If you have a virus which is switching programmes off, then you may get the same problem trying to run malwarebytes etc
Use a PC to download the iso version of avira, second in list, burn it to disc then run it on the affected PC
http://www.avira.com/en/support-download-avira-antivir-rescue-system
If that solves the problem, consider getting malwarebytes from filehippo

If you need a programme to put the iso file onto disc, use imgburn

solved this at work the other day using this tutorial:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-win-7-internet-security-2011
Follow it to the letter.
Afterwards you will get an open with dialog box every time you try to run a program. Simply go here:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
and download EXE File Association Fix (Restore default association for EXE files), extract and run the .reg file. When prompted 'accept' the registry changes :beer:0 -
furthermore - after removal make sure you check to see if you have any antivirus protection. I suspect you don't - get something like avast or AVG....0

The OP has (or had) MSE.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Done all that thanks, it had 6 items which were removed. Think I'll take MSE off as it doesnt seem that good if this managed to get through. Is avast ok or should I be paying for one for better protection?0

Some options here

Glad you got it sorted0 -
Can someone explain how these things get on to my computer when my MSE was saying protected?0

You should buy Mcafee Total Protection its Excellent!0

Because no AV program is 100% secure. Thousand of new viruses are released every day.
McAfee-you are not serious?
90% of people on here with infections seem to be running Norton, McCrappy, or AVG Free.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I understand what you say about new viruses but how are they actually getting on the computer? Where do they come from? Could it be the kids on msn?0
