i was quoting the HFH who said he had a nasty bill so im refering to wifi,

if it would be a hotels wifi and there was a charge then yes i can understand if a bill would be high but theres no charge if the wifi is free to use eg like what mcdonalds do in the uk

I agree and I know you were quoting HFH, I was suggesting HFH was perhaps confusing Wi-Fi (should always be free unless you knowingly submit payment details to use a Wi-Fi network e.g. BT Openzone etc like you say) with 3G/GPRS data/internet which is chargeable by the mobile phone company (and at a much higher cost when roaming abroad).

The hotel I was looking at specifically was The Point Resort Orlando, it has wireless in public areas but only wired access in the rooms, I know most hotels do now offer wireless in the rooms - but obviously not all!

Connectify looks like what I will need - although I would like to leave the laptop at home.

If you want to leave your laptop at home, a smaller option is to use a basic wireless router. You could pick one up for around £10, configure it to work with your smart phone at home before you leave and just take it with you.

Ethernet cable from wall socket to router, plug into power and away you go :)

I am planning a trip to America later this year and have noticed that some hotels provide a wired internet connection (ethernet I assume). How can I make my own WiFi hotspot so I can connect my Android phone?

    Thanks
Put the wifi module in your laptop into "AP mode". You don't need to buy a wireless router, nor software.
