Although when I was in halls at university (Sheffield, 2001-2) I couldn't understand why anyone would want to spend £100+ on a TV license. Either you were missing out on the important social life at university or you weren't working hard enough :D

Oh, and by the way everyone, just because MSE Helen did it, doesn't mean you can do it too... it's license, not licence.

(See? All those tution fees were worth it... )

I would rather save £9k a year and spell it wrong :D.

As far as I can see, things have changed recently down at T.V licencing, I'm pretty sure that previously you had to have a licence if you had a working tv, one that you could watch live tv on. (Even if you said you only watched rented videos or dvds)
The wording now says that a licence has to be purchased to watch and/or record live programmes, that is programmes as they are being broadcast, therefore, if you have a tv monitor that you connect to your computer, or a laptop with a tv card in, and only watch downloaded tv programmes, or catch-up your viewing with an internet provider, then I don't think you have to buy one.

I may be wrong, check it out here and tell me if you agree.

This is from Tv licensing site.
    Computers and laptops

Many TV channels are now available to watch over the internet. If you’re watching programmes on a computer or laptop as they're being shown on TV, then you need a TV Licence. However, you don’t need to be covered by a licence if you’re only using ‘on-demand’ services to watch programmes after they have been shown on TV. So, you need a licence to watch any channel live online, but you wouldn’t need one to use BBC iPlayer to catch up on an episode of a programme you missed, for example.

This is from elsewhere on the site,
What if a TV Licence is not needed

The law states that you need to be covered by a TV Licence if you watch or record television programmes, on any device, as they're being shown on TV. This includes TVs, computers, mobile phones, games consoles, digital boxes and DVD/VHS recorders.
You don't need a licence if you don't use any of these devices to watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV - for example, if you use your TV only to watch DVDs or play video games, or you only watch programmes on your computer after they have been shown on TV. If this is the case, please let us know, as this helps us to keep our database up to date and means you won't receive the standard letters we send to unlicensed addresses.
