sorry - one more question, how do i find out which of those cards (BT/Amazon etc) are from the MBNA stable (without trawling through their websites one by one?)

Try http://www.balancetransferexpert.co.uk/

Input your existing Virgin card and it will show you only those cards which are not issued by MBNA ie only those cards you can actually balance transfer too

thanks all for advice - much appreciated.
am going to call customer loyalty and see if they can shed any light on whether application actually went through or whether it was system error etc.
then have to go from there.
will update and appreciate anymore advice/insight if anyone has heard/had similar situations

Interesting post. I applied for the MBNA cashback card about a month ago and got the same message on the screen. But I haven't heard from MBNA since so I assumed I was declined and the letter got lost. Your post made me wonder if my application got "lost" but I've just checked my credit file and indeed MBNA did a search on me.

another (probably silly) question ....

IF a credit search was done by MBNA and I have been rejected, how long do I have to wait before I can apply for another credit card without the search being 'too adverse'?
I wish I had never started the application for MBNA now...nightmare considering I need to find a BT card asap ...sigh.
