Installing Woodburner Building Regs Question

I've prepared my fireplace with a slate hearth and an looking for a woodburning stove which I am confident I can install but what do I have to do legally? I believe I have to comply with Building Regs but do I need an inspector to take a look now or when I have installed the stove?
Also I have a gas supply to one side of the hearth that used to supply the gas fire. This is capped off but would it have to be completely removed?
Anyone gone through the Building Regs inspection recently?
Thanks for your help.

I'm intending to fit one myself as soon as I 've taken the old fireplace out so have made a few enquiries. It either has to be fitted by a HETAS engineer in which case you don't need to tell building control. If you do it yourself you have to apply to the council for a building regs notice. Then you have to do a smoke test on the chimney to make sure there's enough draw. This is witnessed by one of their staff. They'll suggest you fit a chimney liner which are expensive. The stove has to have a 6" air gap at the sides and round the back adjacent a non combustible wall/ chimney and sit on a hearth of 2" thickness. If the stove produces over 4kw (I think) heat you'll have to fit an air brick in the room. Then they come and inspect it after it's fitted. Charge about £60. Whose going to know if you just did it and kept quiet. Only trouble is will your insurance pay out if the house goes up in flames?

I know this is a late post so I am just posting for reference.

You can install the stove yourselve but youmust do one of the following:

    A) have a building control officer present who will guide you/correct you and sign it off at the end once happy

    B) get the stove installed then call out a building contraol officer to sign it off (You must not use the stove until signed off

or get it installed by a Hetas approved installer who will install then sign it off (will cost a lot more)
