Orange Contract

Hello,

My 24 Month contract with orange is (finally) coming to an end in October. I searched the Orange website FAQs but information on ending contracts and leaving was none existant (lol). So basically i'm a bit clueless as to what the best way to go about switching to GiffGaff pay as you go once my contract is up.

Do I just stick with the phone I have now and ring them up a month before my current orange contract ends and say I'm leaving?

Can I leave earlier?

Next month I'm due an upgrade. Can I take an upgrade without been tied down to another contract with Orange?

Will I need to buy a sim free phone?

Cheers,

Mark

You make your move the month before your contract is up. Either give notice (and lose your number) or ask for the PAC code to transfer it to giffgaff.

Asking for the PAC code does NOT cancel the contract - only when you use it.

Orange is like a charity. It gives out upgrade mobile phones free of charge without expecting the recipients to stay with them for a contract period. So why stick at 1 new handset? Why not ask for 2 phones next month?? Of course you will be tied to a new contract when you upgrade.

When you move to a new network, you will need to get your current phone unlocked if it came from Orange and is locked. You can ask them or visit your market where for £10 - £15 you can get it unlocked.

Yes - give them a month's notice and that will finish it. If you want to take your phone number with you, you need to ask for a PUK code which you use within a month and/or before your contract expires.
    Can I leave earlier?

Yes but you need to pay them for the rest of the line rental

    No

Depends on your phone, most can be unlocked with little trouble.

A lot you can do yourself (my San Francisco took less than five minutes of googling to unlock) - worth googling before you pay anyone.

Wrong! Don't confuse the OP. The PUK code unlocks a phone that has been network locked, a PAC code is the Port Authorisation Code that allows transfer of numbers to another network.

Too many people have made that mistake and not got what they wanted.

Thanks for the replies and making it clear what I need to do, I did suspect as much with the upgrade but just wanted confirmation.

My phone is a Nokia 6303i. I'll probably end up buying a new phone at some point as after 1.5 years of carrying it around it's looking a bit tired but does a job. I will at first want to get this unlocked and I'm sure that will be easy enough to do.

    Cheers

Yes, you have to give one month notice. You'll have to request the PAC if you want to port your number to another network. It lasts 30 days too.

You can, but you'll have to pay for all remaining months upfront anyway.

If your phone is locked to Orange you can unlock it.

Whoops - yes, sorry I know the difference but was in a rush - good catch.
