Supermarket cashiers pocketing notes

Options
Just a heads up, whenever you use notes and expect a large amount of change, make sure you check you get the right amount.

I find every so often they enter different note amount you gave them on their till, and give you the wrong change. Then pocket the £5 or £10 for themselves.

I've heard of till staff doing this quite a lot with 50ps or £1s, if you think about it over the course of an 8-hour shift they could easily be doubling their wage and customers are less likely to notice or think they've just pressed something wrong into the till. If you think this has happened, I'd report it to a manager/supervisor before returning to the cashier in question as security can perform random searches if they believe someone to be stealing from the tills, this way you're not giving them enough warning to hide the cash elsewhere so they don't get caught out.

I find bar staff to be the worst at it though, they'll ususally argue you down if you confront them too as they take advantage of the fact that you're likely drunk, even if you're not!

Mind you, bar staff do put up with a lot of drunk people making false accusations too - you can see why they get defensive as the only sober person in a busy bar with hundreds of drooling idiots picking fights.

I had a barman chase me recently as I'd forgotten to pick up about £18 change, so don't tar them all with the misdeeds of a few.

    Who are 'they'?

You titled this thread "Supermarket cashiers pocketing notes".

Is this a specific supermarket or all of them?

When I worked on checkouts, I wouldn't have dreamed of doing this and I'd imagine most other checkout staff are the same.

Besides, there are cameras watching the tills.

They could easily get around that by simply giving an accomplice too much change at the end of a shift. (Not saying any do - but it's possible).

I know at least one pair of bar staff who used to do that. Every couple of weeks or so they would give me change for a £5 when I'd given then a £10. They never made a fuss when I told them, just gave me the correct change as if it was a genuine mistake.

Trying to be clever they would occasionally bring back too much change to make it look as if they got it wrong both ways but they would always notice just before handing it over (which the never did when short changing).

They were probably making a fortune!

I agree, what an odd assumption to make.

Surely this should be a no-brainer - and so should checking your receipt to make sure you've not been overcharged.

I had a woman accuse me of this when I worked till.

My till had to be taken off and counted up, no errors found.
The woman was all huffy saying she couldn't hang around whilst that happened and demanding the money now (area manager was in and he refused to budge).
In the end she said she'd be back later for the money, guess what she never returned.
