Ok. Ethernet cable - we have to run the disk in the pc and then wire the router up to the pc itself yes? The husband says he knows how to do that.
This stuff is a nightmare, I think you're all very very clever.

Pretty much yes. You can buy cables for a couple of quid in various lengths, so measure how long you need - around the edge of the room, including the drops to the devices at either end. There will be one supplied with the router, but probably not long enough.
When using wired, it's a good idea to turn off wireless to avoid conflicts - some do it automatically, but you will get advice here.
    Connection is something like this

you NEVER need a disk to connect or setup a wired / wireless router. The disk is only there to install junk and adverts from your ISP onto your PC.

Pretty much all modern routers once setup you can just plug into / connect to. setup can be done via a web browser (needs to be done via a cable 1st time as the wireless won't be setup).

Please find somewhere to scrounge an ethernet cable for free (friends / relatives) or get a £1 - £2 one online rather than 1 £20 - £30 dixons/curries one

unless you NEED to operate your PC from accross the room (eg you have it piped into your main TV for iplayer etc and want to use it from the sofa) wired is always the way to go -if nothing else you'll find your wireless batteries constantly going flat at the worst possible moment and things needs to be setup from scratch again

(nothing stopping you keeping a spare or even having more than 1 keyboard / mouse hooked up simultaneously)

USB keyboards available from £2 online, mice £5+ (but if being used day to day rather than as a spare spending a little more will get you ones that don't feel especially cheap and plastically)

It may be an issue with the new pc having a 802.11n card , your linksys will certainly not have 11n , but it may be worth going into the router and changing the wireless to 802.11g mode only i am guessing it is currently set at mixed (802.11b and 11.g) some combinations of card/router are very picky. It won't hurt to try ... Log in to router via ethernet user probably admin/password go to settings wireless and have a look.

  • it could well be that you are using wilress N on the computer and the wireless is only G (they say its backward compatible, but THEY say a lot of things... dont they!) there may also be too many connections hitting the router and it cant cope. are you using torrents & is the router pass protected?

t know what torrents are and don't know if its pass is protected (LOL) But we shoved the ethernet cable from the back of the pc into the router and I now have 5 bars signal and its working ok. Crossing everything.. I will probably get a new router when I get some money.
thanks everybody for your patience !

Also don't forget to secure your router (google WPA or WPA2) otherwise you might have people using/abusing your system.
