Got new pc yesterday, signal strength from router is 2 bars, then it zonks upto 4 then down to 2 again, and often it loses the signal altogether. Old laptop (oh how sorry I am that I traded you in, wee friend) was fine. Just checked this now and signa; strength is 1mbps.
Also, it has Bullguard installed. Am sure I had probs last time I had this - might this be the problem?

I don't see how Bullguard would be a problem. How far away is the router?
Did the PC come with a Windows 7 disc (i'm assuming its Win 7)? If so, I would probably do a clean install with that. Hopefully the pre-installed programs won't be installed on that version. I assume it would be a standard disc, although I may be wrong.
Alternatively just phone the shop? What PC is it?Thought for the day: each generation of mankind tends to hug the illusion of having reached the culmination of human achievement. Yet, as we scoff at our groping ancestors, so our descendants will surely scoff at us.

Possible problems hmmm ok what pc is it (I know you got it from your local pc shop) so lets try which router have you got , and which network card is on the pc (control panel/device manager) It may be the fact that the card/router are a bit fiddly about mixed mode ie g/n .4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . What is the make/model of router. Is this a desktop PC or a laptop - if it's a desktop, where is the aerial (or dongle) located - you may need to move it around to get the best signal.0

Just to focus on the router, how old is it? If it is getting on a bit it might not have the latest 802.11n WiFi standard while the computer probably will have. Theoretically, and plenty of technical people will tell you, it should not make a difference assuming x, y and z. But humans made of organic matter find that it can make a difference and maybe a newer router could help.
...probably not what you want to hear, sorry.0 -
What is inbetween the comp and the router? May either be too far away, or something interfering with the signal.0

Go into energy saving options and set the lappy to full power. If that fixes it, it means the energy saving mode was killing the wireless connection
If not, go into the router settings and try a different channel number:idea:0 -
You can also get this phenomenon if the router is on the same channel as a nearby one. I've known people in the same room as their router not being able to connect.0

Ok many thanks people as always. I couldn't get online last night at all - the signal was at 2 bars and speed it said was 2mbps.
PC is a Lenovo A3 series, the white one.
Router is a PITA Linksys, about 5 yrs old.
I dont know what a network card thingy is but in the control panel it says Broadcom 802.11n netweork adaptor if that helps.
Haven't a bloody clue where the aerial or dongle is - but the router is in the room, 2 brick walls between it and the router, but the old laptop worked fine in the same room but not the same spot in the room.0 -
Not busy BSB, I'm in a tiny village with only a couple doz houses. It worked fine before on the old laptop for years. Spent all this money and now can't get on my forums.
Have turned power saving off- now it has 4 bars signal strenght and is at 18 mbps. Remember this is a very rural area with a tiny phone exchange and we dont have all the fancy stuff just basic broadband. I just want it to bloody work and let me onto sites !0 -
With two brick walls in between, a slight difference in position could make a big difference. With this being a desktop type of PC, is it an option to connect to the router with an ethernet cable rather than wireless.0
