Puncture - new tyre and inner tube required?

Hi

I got a puncture last week and so changed the wheel for my spare.

It appears the puncture was caused by a piece of metal (could be a nail, I haven't taken it out yet).

My question is: clearly I need a new tyre to replace the spare, but as the nail has presumably gone through will I also need to replace the inner tube? What about plugging?

modern cars do not have tubes

if a small hole then they may plug ( but think only if its in the tread not the wall ?? )

To be fair the OP makes no mention of whether we're talking about a car or not. He could be talking about a bike. :D

All jokes aside my friend has a 51 Kia Rio and that had inner tubes inside its original tyres.

    It's a car :)

The tyre is Michelin. Spose I will take it down to kwik Fit and see if it can be fixed or....

If it's away from the edge it can be plugged - cost should be about £10-15.

Take it to a smaller independent tyre place, don't use Kwik-Fit. Far too many horror stories about people going in for a new tyre and coming out with half their car replaced. ;)

    New tyre, no questions.

Perhaps there should be a poverty threshold below which people are just banned from owning cars.

    Fair point well made, property.advert.

It's time we stopped this left wing sentimentalism and reintroduced the traditional workhouse, with human treadmills for electricity generation. Why are we wasting money on windfarms when we have peasants lying idle?

And I'm warming to the idea that dole scroungers and single mums should be forced to donate their organs as a condition of receiving benefits. Everyone must contribute something to the Big Society, if only the odd kidney or liver, or perhaps even a spare lung.

Maybe property.advert will stump up the £100+ for a new Michelin. I've had many tyres plugged over the years, all have lasted until they were replaced.

If plugging wasn't safe it wouldn't be allowed.

    Repair or replace?

Well it depends on what sort of damage has been done, what sort of tyre, what sort of car its sitting on.

If its just a simple puncture within the tread area and there is no sidewall perforation/damage,the tyre still has good tread on it and it lives on a run of the mill car that just does normal speeds and motoring then have a professional repair done on it.

There is no issue with this being done.
Try national tyres or similar..not kwik fit.

If its some expensive low profile tyre on some road going sports car and you drive fast up and down the motorway all day..get a new tyre.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

9 times out of 10 if you have run the car on a flat it will be damaged anyway. It doesnt take much!

all the side walls crack and are not repairable, then you are running on a compromised tyre. worry less about the tread and more about the integrity of the tyre itself!
