Hello all, I've been talking to Susan and she asked me to let you all know she wont be on tonight. Mam isnt very well and Susan, her brother and sister may be with her all night. I will try to pass on any news, we have agreed that Susan will ring me so that I dont ring at an inopportune moment. Hopefully all will be well but please bear with us if you dont hear from us for a while.

Time for bed now as its been a very long day. Goodnight everyone.

Oh no - I hope the news isn't bad

Hiya guys - just got back from the home - thanks for all your messages :A

My sister went down to see mam 11.30 this morning to find her lying flat staring at ceiling and waving her arms around aggressively, as well as shaking violently. So she went to speak to the nurse, who spoke to the carers who said that Mam shook like that normally. My sister was not impressed as this was so different than her shaking hand, or shivers. Nurse took her temp which was slightly up, and then rang the doctor who said to record her temperature every half hour and check back later. By then it was 12.30 pm and Mam's temp had dropped slightly at 1 pm. My sister then texted me and I went straight down, arriving 2.10 pm, by which time Mam's temp should have been recorded again.

We sat each side of her bed and Mam gripped our hands tightly, with her whole body jumping about almost as if in a fit, with Mam groaning and at other times shouting in great pain. Her eyes, and her brain, were elsewhere and she could not hear or respond to us. She had been like this all the time since my sister had arrived at 11.30 am.

About 3 pm, with no further temperatures taken, my sister went to explain how worried we were and the nurse came and took her temp which was the same. She, and the doc who she rang again, thought that Mam may have an infection but were warey of giving her more antibiotics, so were seeing how it went first. About 4 pm the nurse agreed to give her a dose of Oramorph as extra pain-killer to see if this would settle her down.

My BiL then brought my brother down to sit with me, and then took my sister home for something to eat. Mam settled for about 15 minutes then got as bad as she'd been earlier. She was yelling in pain and I checked to find her feet caught up against the bed frame as she had slid down the bed, so we hauled her back up the bed and she settled. We talked to the nurse and carers about her feet getting trapped in bottom of the bed so many times and nurse said she would find out about another sort of bed which lowers your bottom but raises your knees and this keeps you in one place.

Withing 30 minutes of us hauling Mam up the bed, her feet were once again against the bed frame, so I talked to nurse and carers about it again, and the carers came and rearranged the bed, putting the head-rest section flat, with the v-pillow and then another pillow across it to raise Mam's head, and placed pillows under and around her legs to keep them comfy. However, we felt that this might keep her in one place but put Mam in greater risk of aspiration/choking and made feeding/drinking impossible

Mam did settle a bit so we agreed, at 8.30 pm, that I would take my brother home, then go home myself for an hour to have something to eat and see to the cat, then pick my sister up at 9.30 to go down to check on Mam. When we got there, the night staff were brilliant and very worried about Mam. She was more settled now, having had her night-time relaxant, but was still gripping the sides of the bed with all her strength and shaking every so often. Her head was still but her eyes were all over the place. After checking her vitals and ringing the doctor, she started her on a course of antibiotics and said they would take a urine sample to check for infection, and keep a close check on her overnight, promising to ring my sister if any change overnight

We sat another 15 minutes having closed the curtains and put out the light, and Mam was almost sleeping so we came away to let her get some rest. My sister is going down early in the morning and we will take it from there

We have not seen her like this before, not even when she was transferred from the hospital to the home. She was in another world, and panicking, and very frightened, and feverish at times, and this had been all day from before 11.30 am till 11 pm, so is very worrying as she is so weak to start with :( Not that you would have thought it, with the strength she was trying to pull our hands about ;)

Anyway, we just have to see what the antibiotics do and how things are in the morning, so I am just going to have something to eat and get to bed. Love to you all, and thank you friends :A :A

P.S. sorry for long post - I am a lady of many words :o

Thanks guys :A When my sister went down this morning, Mam was in a deep sleep and the carers said she had rested most of the night, so that is good. Only problem is that she needs to be awake sufficiently to swallow to take her meds, and it is important that she gets the antibiotics. Nurse told her, that if Mam wakes, to come get her straight away and she will give her the meds.

My sister just text to say she had managed to wake Mam a little and nurse has given her the antibiotics, but that Mam was choking badly afterwards, before falling sound asleep again

We won't be able to feed her while she is like this, but she eats so well normally that a day or two shouldn't be a problem, we hope. I am going down later, so just waiting for washing to finish and then I am going to have a soak in the bath - a luxury for me with a shower room at home :D

Will keep in touch - hope everyone is well :D
