Speed guns

On my way home today I was trabelling along a fairly short road when I saw 2 police officers standing by the road wasnt sure what they were doing to start with but had a look at my speed which was at approx 30 maybe just below. When I looked in rear view mirror, on the opposite side of the road the sign flashed 20 mph as it was heading near a school, I was heading away from it. Anyway I was a bit concered cause I was speeding so I went round the round about and double back my journey, I couldnt see a sign on my side of the road saying 20mph but the police were holding a hand held speed gun. Im slighty worried I have gone over the limit. I usually am very careful of my speed and normally more a slower driver than anything. Does the police do on the spot fines or do I have to wait see if anything turns up in the post. i live in Scotland if that makes any difference.

Mainly those speed guns are used for a deterrent,if they were to fine you, they'd have had a bike or a car further up the road & get you to pull in for a chat.0

I dont think I was speeding but it just makes you think twice after seeing them. later on in the day I saw the same elsewhere on another road but more police all standing together so I dont no if they were maybe out training. Thanks0 -

@OP - keep an eye open in your post for the next 14 days (assuming that you are the registered keeper of the car). If you aren't the RK you might have to keep your eyes open for a bit longer. My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016).
For those seeking more detailed advice and guidance regarding small claims cases arising from private parking issues I recommend that you visit the Private Parking forum on PePiPoo.com0 -
Wish that was true. There is no requirement that they "have a bike or a car further up the road". All they need do is send out an NIP through the post. How do you think all of the camera vans operate successfully without bikes or cars up the road?

I didn't mention the camera vans, and I do know about them as I was a recipient of a ticket in 07 when I was zapped by one of them.A friend of mine is Traffic Branch, over here the hand held scanners *not van/car mounted, are normally used as a visible deterrent unless the is a speed trap operation being done, like the one they done the other week outside the police barracks round the corner from me.0 -

I assume your mate is in the PSNI as opposed to my mate who is a guard in the Traffic Corps in Dublin. Have a look here at the way they've been trying to slow traffic down now they're being cut back on patrols. My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016).

Sadly, neither of us has a crystal ball in order to be able to tell if this was a speed trap or something more benign and besides it is in an entirely different jurisdiction. Without a significant amount of information - that the OP is unlikely to have - the best advice is that he'll have to keep his eyes on his post for a while.

Yup,he is although he's thinking of emigrating (He's pished off with the way things are ran) to Oz or NZ.I knew him in the forces years ago & met up again after 20 odd years when I was working for NTL at a street exchange & he walked past after getting his paper!
Have'nt seen them 'signs' yet, must look out for them on my next trip down to Dublin..0 -
Still nothing turned up in the post but still time I suppose. Thanks for the comments0

My husband got a NIP in the post back in February, apparently our car had been filmed the previous week doing 35 in a 30 zone - a very long, straight dual carriageway which we use several times a day, when we drive between our own house and disabled daughter's flat. We couldn't recall this particular occasion, much less who was driving, but we gave them as much info as we were able, requested copy of photo, which was useless for ID purposes. Now he's been summonsed, charged with both speeding and failing to provide driver's name. We told them it had to be either one or the other of us, as we both drive the car, both act as carers for our daughter, but if we can't remember and they can't identify who was driving, just what do they call making a reasonable effort to identify the driver? We have driven for about 60 years between us, and probably more than half a million miles and both have clean licenses. We're both retired, in our 60s, so hardly 'boy racers'! And in the 36 years we've lived here, I don't recall that there was ever an accident on this particular road. So I'm wondering just how much they're trying to extract from our pensions? And what sort of chance do we stand in court?0

camera vans post the fines, well the procedure out in the post.
If a cop is there with a laser gun, they will stop you on the spot and deciede what to do with you;.
