    All is not lost.

    Can you get a copy f the bank statement that shows you paid off the contract? If you can, then send a letter to Orange Chief Exec's office, with a copy of the bank statement showing that you paid off the balance. Obviously censor anything you want to keep private, but keep the name, a/c no and sort code visible.

    Now any company is obliged to keep its financial records for years and you should ask them to check their financial records. Also, how did they get to £550? Did you have a £45 pm or more contract?

    Finally, ask for a copy of your last bill as it may show a call to 150 that was your request to cancel.

    Don't forget that you can also ask for info under the Data Protection Act and then they are obliged to send you what they have. If they have no records on file, they are breaking so many laws it's not true!

    It's debt collectors, not 'they'. Pretty normal for the amount to rise dramatically after a debt having been sold to the collectors.
