    Ummmmmm................ ok fair enough.
But why then was there such a fuss years ago about people taking ownership of cars by stealing or forging the V5?

That's why the V5 was changed to say "this is not proof of ownership" - to encourage buyers to ensure the person with the V5 has legal title to the car.

My car is owned by Santander......

    Completely wrong.

Read the new V5, they have made it even clearer for those that think they know it all.

It's been on the V5 for years, the old V5 used ti state it too, just not across the front you actually had to read the document..

Unless the car is on finance the V5 may not prove ownership, but it'll be down to anyone without it to prove they own it instead.
That statement is about as useful as the warning for allergy sufferers
"may contain peanuts" on a bag of peanuts
  • OWNERSHIP can be proven with a purchase reciept from the garage/dealer/private seller you bought it from.

but we can also aquire OWNERSHIP, a vehicle bought as a gift given as a gift or inherited through estate or even more oddly but not unheared of is that someone has left a vehicle at a house that youve purchased not unheared of that cars be left in barns or outhouses and been hidden by junk etc etc, and aslong as the owner cannot be traced car is not PCP HP reported stolen and all avenues exhausted in finding the owner you can legally aquire it as ownership, you then have the task of REGISTERING IT in your name.
