Blackberry? How do I use it and what is the best plan?

Sorry, another BB question. I have one and at the moment I only use it for texts and calls and I know I can get more out of it only I do not know how I can use it.

I want a Curve 9300 and I understand that this has BB Maps which I'd like to use. Do I have to pay for this service? On the internet for example?

I am with Orange, at the moment I am on Dolphin 15, an old plan which has no internet and I cannot get internet so I am going to change. I get it for £12.50 a month and have 100 minutes, unlimited texts and this is enough for what I use it for right now. My contract is up for renewal so I want to choose the best plan for what I need. I do like the idea of using it for the internet on but I am terrified of going over the limit and using a few thousand £ by mistake.

Can I ask the company to set a credit limit of £50 so I could not go over that limit, if I had a problem with the settings I could then call up and sort them out before it got out of control.

I also understand I can use it for apps, where would I find out about these please? I hate that I have this phone that I cannot use properly. And BB Messenger - I can only use this if other people have BB messenger too? Do I have to pay for this?

Thank you for any help you can offer. The Orange screen did not tell me much on how to use it and I do not know anyone else that has one, everyone else has iphones but I cannot use them (my husband has one) so I want to stay with my BB.

WIth the Blackberry you pay for a BB bundle each month for unlimited internet. I have had mine 18 months and have never paid anymore than my monthly contract amount (£25). The only time you need to turn it off is going abroad which is very simple.

There are apps and some are free and some you pay for. These are accessed via your BB through an BB icon on the menu.

I got the BB bundle thrown in when I last renewed.

Messenger can only be used between BBs but I am trying to get to grips with Live Profile at the moment which is supposed to allow you to messenger other android mobiles. The BB messenger is "free" in that I think its part of the BB bundle.

They are also UMA phones which means they can use your wireless broadband signal, this is great for me because we have a poor Orange signal in the house, again this is free as it will use your free minute allocation.

The Blackberry bundle would cost you an extra £5 a month.
Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug). ;)
  • As MissKeith says the Blackberry Bundle is an extra £5pm. With that you "should" get is Blackberry Messenger, push email and internet access. Not sure what Oranges limit is. I'm on a contract with O2 and I get 750mb UK data and Unlimited Wi-Fi for Blackberry.

Blackberrys aren't as data hungry as some smartphones. I've never gone over my limit despite been connected to the internet 24/7/365.

I use Google maps which is another free App from Google. If you set it up correctly you don't even need to use your pc.

For £5 a month you get BBM, push email, internet, free Facebook usage and 500mb data, Blackberry handsets compress the data so they use alot less than other smartphones, 500mb should be more than enough

There are some good deals on Dialaphone and they include Blackberry Messenger:

    http://www.dialaphone.co.uk/phone/Blackberry_Curve_3G_9300/

And there's £45.45 for Dialaphone on Topcashback.

My DS has a BB on Orange with 500mb. When he first got the contract I phoned to see how much he was using. They told me not to worry so long as he's not downloading he would be unlikely to go over his allowance and if he did they would warn him when approaching the limit. They did tell me how much he had used in the first month. Can't remember how much it was now but it was a tiny amount. He uses it for Facebook and the like and for general internet browsing.

Thanks for the info, I have changed the OP as I've decided to move from Orange. I still have a few months remaining on my contract so there is no rush but if I stay on Dolphin 15 I cannot get internet.

We cannot get Vodaphone here so this leaves 02 or T-mobile. Just hunting out the best deal now but I like the look of the purple Blackberry on T-mobile.

Thankyou for your help on getting the best from the phone. Seems daft to have a phone like this and not use it.

Don't forget Orange might offer you a deal when you request your PAC code at the end of your contract.

    They recently offered me -

    BB Curve 9300 / 600mins / UL txts / UL internet / £18/mth for 24mths
