Agreed lessonlearned. I used to have a very negative mindset, very cynical and I desperately wanted to change but couldnt. And then I found self help books, Law of Attraction, Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway ect. Just reading that I suggested self help books your probably thinking 'oh pur-lease!' but that right there is your negative mindset taking over! Whatever you think about those kind of books you need to battle past and read one. It's your negative attitude stopping you and it will hold you back forever unless you really want to change. I kid you not, reformed character right here. There are still times when my negative mind iterrupts my positive thoughts and I catch myself and physically tell myself to be quiet! Works a treat :D

I think self help books really can be useful. It's all about taking control and educating yourself. I really wish schools would teach this more often. So many school children get knocked back and lose confidence and struggle.

Some of you may know that I live in Derby. There has been a recent initiative where business leaders and psychologists have been going into the schools to teach pupils the concepts of positive thinking. They piloted it in a couple of schools and got some very good results. Apparently they are now looking at rolling out a programme throughout schools in the county.

    What's that song

"Once there was a little old ant, thought he'd move a rubber tree plant".:rotfl::rotfl:

I think it's called "High Hopes".

Yes, you're absolutely right. I tend to find myself wondering what right the author has to be telling me this stuff, and it spirals down from there really. Especially with finance-related stuff, I can't stop myself thinking that if the author was so good at making money or wealth or whatever they want to call it, they wouldn't be sitting there writing books, they'd be off enjoying themselves.

In fact I bought one at Christmas in the WH Smiths sale (pay full price? never!) called "Serious Money - how to make it and enjoy it" and I couldn't fight off the irony that it was being sold in the clearance section not for a pound, but two copies shrink-wrapped together for a pound, so 50p each. The "and enjoy it" appealed to me, but I haven't got that far yet - the trouble with it being 50p of course is that I don't value it seriously and haven't properly read it yet.

Anyway, thanks all for the responses.

I bought this http://www.amazon.com/Science-Getting-Rich-Think-ebook/dp/B008HVCLP6 before Christmas.

It's a combined volume of 2 classic wealth books and does make interesting reading.

I have the first of those - I had an email offering a free eBook version by signing for their occasional newsletter. I must say that the newsletter updates do seem to be getting more and more, how to put this, unusual in their approach.

Woah there. Now that really is a piece of cynicism - very misplaced too, if you don't mind me saying so. A very strange way of looking at things.

The point about authors and books is that it's a very good example of a very effective and simple form of a second passive income stream. You write the book and then reap the rewards in the form of royalties.

Other than the time it takes and the effort involved it is a comparatively low risk strategy - assuming you get a publisher to foot the bill for marketing etc. There is no capital outlay unlike say stocks and shares where your capital is always at risk.

It makes perfect business sense. I see nothing sinister about someone writing a book, whether it's a page turner piece of fiction or a business book or an academic tome.

Your argument about "if they were so good at making money why aren't they out enjoying themselves" entirely misses the point.

They probably are doing just that. At the same time they are earning even more money in the form of passive income from cashing in on their original skills and talent that made them money in the first place. ;)

What's the problem there. Sounds like a very good business model to me. Become successful and then write a book about it and make even more money. :D

Tink. who started this thread, has been having a go at doing exactly this. Writing and publishing E books. I think it's a great idea.

At the moment I don't think I particularly have anything to say that anyone would want to read. Maybe one day................

I really like this thread. I am a semi reformed cynic. I have read feel the fear - loved it but can't get back into it at all. Just want to curl up most days!

It is quite scary how much is possible in life and how little most of us do.

I am reading that money book someone here recommended. it is very interesting.

there was something else but I am so sleepy xx
    Nevertheless she persisted.

Thanks for the that, I thought it was Sinatra. Those kids are cute.

Good to hear you are semi reformed. Keep at it, you'll get there.

In the meantime make sure you get enough sleep......

Yes, I accept that. I suspect there may well be good books out there, but I'm not sure they're for me.

Anyway, I don't want to drag this thread away from its original intention to be a place of inspiration so I think I'll revert to reading for now at least. I started reading it for some inspiration and do get some. Thanks again.

    No problem.

Hope my thoughts have helped and I do hope it didn't come over as nagging or criticism.....:o It was never intended as such.

    Just remember

    1. Never give up on your dreams
    2. If we want our lives to change then we are the ones who have to make those changes. Usually this means changing not just what we do but also how we think.
    3. The sky is not the limit, there are footsteps on the moon:D

OK that one is a bit cheesy.

Well folks, not the best of weeks. OH has had a fairly serious chest infection - well actually given his condition and overall state of health, all chest infections are very serious, in fact potentially fatal.

I have been warned that it will, in all likelihood, be a chest infection that will be the cause of his death. He is very at risk.

So.... I've spent a lot of time by his bedside, doing my Florence Nightingale bit, so other than the seminar this week, I've not done much really to further my business ambitions.

Happy to say OH is out of the woods - for now. The grim reaper was hovering but my OH fought back and kicked death back into the shadows. What a man.

Tomorrow is our 30th wedding anniversary. I picked a good one. :rotfl:

Anyway all is well again. The Gods have been kind once more.

The EA who sold my house has offered me a job. :rotfl:

I'm thinking it over. Part time or some kind of freelancing would suit me best. I really can't do full time work because of my committments to my OH and my mum & dad (still need to get their care arrangements sorted out).

I have at least now got them to sort out their affairs. We had a meeting with their solicitor last week and she has it all in hand, so that's one thing less. Dad seems relieved that I've stepped in. I had to tread very carefully of course. I was very diplomatic.

So this week.......what will I achieve.

This weeks money tasks are to top up our ISA's before financial year end, tackle the last few bits and pieces of paperwork that didn't get finished, look at a couple of insurances.

Meet with the EA to discuss that job - maybe??

Anything else will be a bonus.

Have a great week, people. Hope you make some money.:D
