  • MKMS- Thanks for the info regarding eBay! We're currently delcluttering and using various different "cash for your junk" type websites. But for the bigger stuff that we could get more money for from eBay we are going to do that instead. We didn't know they had free listing days so we will sure take advantage of that!

Wow! Well done on your progress LessonLearned! That's absolutely fantastic. I like the idea of the shares/ bonds for children. When we plan our first child I might look into something like this so that it could be spent on their first car or uni fees, etc.

We've made a lot of progress this week. My husband is now officially half way through his radiotherapy, it's gone so quick! We've spent the weekend sorting out where we are now in terms of debts and figuring out a payment plan so that we can then focus on investing for our future. 'The Rule of Money' has been absolutely great as it has shown us how and where to start on this new journey. We've also completely spring cleaned the downstairs of our house, just the upstairs to go... It finally feels like a home now as we've been using it like a hotel since all the health problems started with my OH.

So positive about the future! :T :j

Sparkle, it's a free listing weekend this weekend!

I have 4 accounts set up for my two sprogs, they each have their own account that their pocket money/birthday money goes into and then they each have a stocks and shares account in my name that I pay into monthly for their future. They won't know about this until I feel they are mature enough to use the money wisely. Aiming to be able to give them £15-20k each depending on age. I didn't have any handouts growing up and everything I have or want I work for myself. My friend who has had handouts (a £50k deposit and half her mortgage paid for) is so much further ahead in life financially and I would live this for my children. I would love help with my deposit but both my parents aren't well off and I seem to be lending my father money, role reversal much?!
    £20k in 2023 = £2718 £2023 in 2023 = £196.41 Grocery challenge £250= £195.80 **MONEY MAKES ME HAPPY**
  • Here's a book you might find of interest. It's called "A Pocket Full of Hopes and Dreams by a guy called Jeff Pearce. He built up a chain of boutiques.

Thank you Lessonlearned, I obtained this book via the library and read it in a few days. It gave me some inspiration and some ideas so THANK YOU!!

Glad you found it helpful. I thought you would.

I thought this was a fabulous book. I found it very moving especially the way he writes about his mum. She was truly inspirational and you can see where he got his drive and determination from.

And of course what made his success all the more remarkable was the fact that he is so severely dyslexic and how the educational system of the day let him down so badly.

He overcame so many obstacles not least of which were his awful careers advisor at school.

Given my own circumstances - ie having to rebuild my finances - I found his response to the collapse of his first business and how he fought back and rebuilt it again very inspirational. It made me realise that I can fight back and start again.

In the past I have worked for a number of millionaires and I have learned from every one of them. One of them had lost 3 business before he finally made it. He just kept trying and beavering away till he succeeded.

If you never get the chance to work for and learn from real life business moguls then reading biographies can be a great way to learn.

I agree, his story was inspirational. His teachers, careers advisors wrote him off, his mother believed in him. I am hoping to reserve the Richard Branson book next when they get it in, as he is dyslexic and I find him an inspiration too. :)
  • I think it's so amazing when people with learning difficulties or disabilities become really successful. It just goes to show us that anybody can do it!

Just an update, I've actually got a great idea for a new business so I'm just putting together a business plan! I'm hopefully going to carry on modelling whilst setting it up, until I feel in a position to be able to give it up and concentrate on my business and expanding. I love modelling but I'm kind of losing my "mojo" for it. I think with everything that's happened with my husband and I, I want to concentrate on our next steps in life like starting a family. Unless I go into maternity modelling when we decide to start our family there's not really a future for me in the industry.

How is everybody else been getting on? I'm excited to read about your progress!

Good to hear you are formulating a plan. If you are setting out on a journey then you need a map, if you want to get anywhere in life you need a plan.:rotfl:

Tonight i am taking DS2 to a business seminar. It's free:D and no I will not be getting out my credit card to pay to go on any courses etc.

Bearing in mind that becoming wealthy is also about spending wisely as much as earning well I have a small plan for the next few months, or rather a self imposed goal.

I am still looking at my cost of living budgets, tweeking and refining where-ever possible. There appears to be a temporary shortfall:o

However, that is not the disaster it sounds I do have money - I just don't want to spend it. Not only do I not want to touch my capital, I also want to let the interest (such as it is) to accrue.

So my plan is - for the next few months to make my housekeeping budget cash neutral.

Can I do this. Can I do it for 6 months.

I have plenty of food in the cupboards and freezer, about £100 in vouchers and reward points, some dribs and drabs in old savings accounts which are doing nothing, a couple of hundred pounds in refunds from old energy suppliers etc.

I also have a good supply of bits and bobs to sell. Oh and a stack of salad and veg seeds.

So that's my mini challenge for now. To make the food budget cash neutral, so that I don't need to raid the coffers whilst keeping my 6'3" son fed and watered.

    I like a challenge. ;)

    Good morning

Just a little catch up. I'm up with the larks, the sun is shining and I'm raring to go but first a heads up about last night's little outing.

Well I took DS2 to the business seminar last evening. Without being cocky it didn't teach me anything I didn't already know or can't find out for myself. It did my DS2 good though. I could see it gave him a much needed boost and things to think about.

Afterwards we went to a trendy bistro for supper, he drove so I could enjoy a little tipple. Just one of the advantageous of having grown up children. I no longer have to be Mum's Taxi all the time.:rotfl:

When people ask what would be my one luxury if I made it big time and became seriously rich, I have 2. Apart from the posh house of course. A personal chauffeur and custom made shoes.:rotfl::rotfl:

Not so frivolous as they sound. I can use the "passenger" time to conduct my business empire and my feet would always be both comfortably and elegantly shod.....

Anyway back to the seminar. One thing that struck me last night at that seminar was just how many negative cba people there are in the world. Doom-mongers and nay-sayers.

People strolling in late, unprepared, not bothering with their appearance. There were men there who were unshaven with unwashed greasy hair. Now if someone had just come straight from work dressed in their jeans and work boots etc I wouldn't turn a hair. That's not what I'm talking about and to my mind someone attending a meeting straight from work wearing work clothes is perfectly acceptable.

No what I'm talking about are the kind of people who make no attempt to be reasonably dressed, by that I mean clean and tidy, not head to toe designer gear, who cannot be punctual, who refuse to switch off their mobile phones (one guy let his ring twice despite being politely asked to turn it off) and who don't really listen to the speakers and who just want to whinge and whine about the recession.

Hardly surprising they are unsuccessful in their half arsed endeavours. Nutters:rotfl:

I could see my DS2 taking it all in, watching and learning, as much from observing other people as listening to the speakers.

When he arrived home from work to pick me up I said to him whizz upstairs and get changed whilst I pour you a quick cuppa. He was clean but dressed in work uniform and heavy work boots (he works in a garden centre). I could see he thought I was fussing but I noticed him looking at the people who I've just talked about and raising his eyebrows at me. I could see it all registering so he learned a good business lesson there. Manners and punctuality.

Anyway I have a great day planned. Later this evening I will do some more number crunching, my internet banking and shift some money around and make some calls. But this morning I'm having a few hours off.

I'm going exploring round my new area.. Now that the snow has cleared it's time to get out and about. This might need to involve sussing out a coffee shop and assessing some cake.:rotfl:

    Have a good day.

You'll all very quiet, making lots of money I trust.....

The trouble is, that if you're one of those people with that outlook (and I am, generally) it's very difficult to change your mind. It's almost like being programmed to think in one way. That said, their presence at the meeting implies they want to do something to change themselves. I find that I am cynical, unfortunately, and it's a very difficult mindset to get out of, and very difficult to get others to understand.

    I don't accept that and it's no excuse. :rotfl::rotfl:

Cynicism is just a mindset and a pretty ugly one at that. Cynicism will eat your soul and destroy your happiness if you let it.

    You just need to re-programme.

You were not born cynical, no one is. Something has happened to you to change your mindset. Not to worry you can change all that.

Have you ever watched small children. If not, study them. Watch their energy, enthusiasm, sense of wonder, optimism and sheer joy of being alive.

Watch them, learn from them, learn how to see the world through a child's eyes. Rediscover the beauty that nature surrounds us with, rediscover the joy of being alive, rediscover a sense of wonder.

I know this sounds a bit new age hippy dippy but you need to do a bit of delving and work out what happened to you to make you feel the way you do. You need to work at it and then move on. You need to rediscover your joire de vie.

Why do you think my nom de plume is "Lesson Learned".

I have made mistakes - bloody hundreds of them:rotfl::rotfl:

    But .......

I never make the same mistake twice;)

I have made some catastrophic mistakes in my time, grave errors of judgement, been betrayed by people I trusted. It happens - it doesn't make me a lesser person.

Negativity and cynicism are just a habit. Habits can be
    changed.

It just takes work and committment.

    Here endeth the lesson.:rotfl:
