I do find the replies to your post fairly strange.

    Claim: "Many americans are fat".
    Rebuttal: "My son isn't".

    Clever.

    Yes.

Wouldn't it be wonderful to live in a world where that kind of logic applied? For one thing, I'd be able to get out of ridiculously high insurance premiums by explaining that while the vast majority of 22 year old male drivers are risk-ignorant boy-racers, I'm not.

    As a 21 year old boy-racer, I'm in agreement.

I'm actually choosing not to drive until absolutely necessary to minimise my insurance liability long term. Thankfully I have no current need for a car besides convenience, I'm sure it's an absolute !!!!!! for those who commute regularly.

I have to admit it's rather tempting with that pink card staring at me every time I flash my ID though.

Hmm. I'm not driving at the moment either.

My car failed it's MOT last August and we just scrapped it. Can't afford a new one yet, but I also don't really NEED one.

The shopping gets delivered, I can commute by Subway relatively cheaply.

I just love driving and the convenience of driving, so I'm going to get a car in the next few months.

The insurance isn't TOO bad... about £800 for the cars I'm after.

I suppose it's probably the NCB + longer driving period. I get quoted £3000 - got my license a few months ago. No thanks.

I'm planning to move to London after I graduate, so I suppose a car might not be too useful after all. And in the spirit of the millionaire thread, a £3k premium could look like a pittance in ten years' time. Oho.

There's nothing wrong with using information to this effect...

The US is statistically far fatter than most countries, the education system is objectively worse, with less people going through college, and those who do paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for it. It's an extremely religious nation, with up to 82% professing to be religious and 40% going as far as to disregard science for religious reasons.

The nationalism and pride in the nation is rife... with almost all schools pledging allegiance to the flag regularly, etc.

Gun crime is obviously a lot more rife, and guns ARE everywhere. And the police thing is just a cultural thing... they're taught to always be suspicious of everybody and are very boisterous... always quick to pull the pistol. But that's probably the right culture for their country, given that any random person on the street could be carrying a lethal weapon.

I haven't said anything that isn't shown by statistics... okay, statistics don't apply to EVERYBODY, but they increase the likelihood of you being right about an individual when you make assumptions about them based on statistics...

I.e. I'd be right more often than I'm wrong to first assume that any given American is:

    - Overweight
    - Owns a Gun
    - Is a nationalist
    - Is a Christian

I'd be wrong for SOME, yes, but I'd be right a LOT more than I'm wrong.

my apologies for not fully reading the post, I do have a lot more to say but again having internet issues...

Statistics are basically figures that cen be manipulated to create whatever outcome one wishes to achieve so I tend not to pay too much attention (next time you see a tv ad claiming eg. 92% of women prefer blah blah...read the print at the smallprint that says 83 women were asked EXAMPLE not actually figures ive seen)

heres one for you though...based on population gun crime in the UK is a lot higher than US, leaving you STATISTICALLY higher risk to gun crime in UK

anyhow, with egards to the person saying property and TL isnt the be all and end all...I am well aware of this. again I feel the comments made were very narrow minded. I am far from sainthood but the 1 property I have rented out has been refurbished to a high standard (and not the 'high standard' you often see) We didnt just put cheap bathroom etc, we put in propertiled floor in kitchen etc, mid range kitchen and bathroom etc and I was a little gutted as the bathroom is far superior to our own.The rental price is lower than the average in area so that it i affordable an we make sure we look after the property because, after all it is OUR property regardless of who lives there.

As previously mentioned it is just one stream of income.

I know enough to realise that being narrow minded means you will miss opportunities that are outside your mind scope. I come from one of the worst council estates in the area and had a fairly average childhood.I got bullied for wearing tesco 2 stripe joggers and was far from the coolest ( or least cool) I am not hard done to nor priviliged and dont feel the world has it in for me.....

To the people complaining about house prices etc...thats life. Many factors caused the crash - banks yes, government yes, people borrowing more than they could afford yes. But at the end of the day unless you look for solutions all you will see is problems.

Thanks for that - I was beginning to think it was just me.

I am afraid that I must have stirred up a hornets nest when I suggested that Guitar man was being negative and sarcastic and asked him to be more positive.

What followed was essentially a rant about BTL's, house prices and a swipe at Baby Boomers.

Not wishing to get embroiled in what looked like turning into an on-line gutter fight, I simply stopped posting.

Like you I was amazed and saddened to see this lovely thread denigrate into a virtual soap box for someone who plainly has a huge chip on their shoulder.

Re the anti-American jibes - well what can you say - just ignorant nonsense and best ignored.

Anyway glad to see that Tinktay and yourself are back. Hopefully normal service will now be resumed and we can get back to the business in hand - i.e financial freedom and independence.;)
