I thought I'd add my 2p worth. Making a million has always been my dh's goal. I used to think that was actually what his goal was, when in actual fact I realised it was just something to aim for and that he'd then want to earn 10m. I also realised it was just a reason to work hard, because otherwise you're just working to earn food and pay the bills and that doesn't sound quite so much fun!
For the past few years he's been self employed working purely on the internet. As well as a bit of investing etc. He's written ebooks and done quite well with them (self-published 5,000 as well, which all sold, but that's a different story), although it was previously the main income, it's now just a good extra. There are some things that tick away in the background (those add up), and some things (it's mainly seo) that have to be worked for, but the beauty of the internet and providing a service is that you have low running costs. In fact we work from the kitchen table. His ultimate goal is to have enough things ticking away in the background so that he can put his feet up. Which actually probably means he can work on something else.
I used to think getting rich was what I really wanted, but having thought about it and not being into fast cars, or big houses or holidays abroad I know having enough money to buy the nice food I like and not worrying about bills is actually my main aim. As long as that happens then that would make me extremely content. Having had five years of no debt, until we bought a house, that was a time when we were at our most content. It's a very nice feeling.
It's a good thing to have a goal and a drive to make that happen, because I think it can make you resiliant to the hard times, you will always be looking for a way to make money and you will probably acheive that. Good luck.MSE Forum's favourite nutter :T0 -
I suspect the post about £20 on food is one of mine as we do genuinly spend around £20 a week on food.....now to the person who said you only live once.... We dont have much food in the house other than pasta, rice etc (pasta is 39p a kilo at tesco)
So most days my husband goes and gets fresh veg and a piece of meat (usually out of whoopsies). He makes all our meals from scratch as he thoroughly enjoys cooking and believes in giving the kids the best. Tonight we had hoi sin and garlic stir fry with sirloin steak strips and rice which cost around £3 to feed all 4 of us as the steak was on woopsies for £1 the other week so we got it and froze it.
We grow a bit of fruit and veg because the kids enjoy it so we just got into it and we live up on the moors so we quite often have whimberry pie or blackberry pie, again becaause the kids love going picking berries.
A few weeks ago we had rabbit pie as my husband ran over a rabbit (I wasnt keen but the kids had seconds)
So would say that lifes too short to waste money on crappy micro meals when we have such delicious and varied meals. And to the person that will no doubt say we must have more time than they do...we both work long hours, often 7 days a week, its jus that the time we spend together tends to revolve around family activities rather than tv/console etc. Thats not me looking down my nose thats just me loving my life and loving that we can provide this life for our kids due to the hard work and the time we put intrainee millionaire (aka not there yet!)0 -
and as a side note, we quite often go on 3-4 holidays a year (abroad), we live in a nice area and the kids are happy, heaalthy and very polite obedient young people so its not as though we dont live our lives its just that we choose to restrict what we spend on items that we see as non essential and we make the most of everything. We are far from rich and I cant remember the last time I had money in my purse but im also not struggling with debt and have a pretty comfortable lifetrainee millionaire (aka not there yet!)0

I see your point, but if you do it as a entrepreneur in a new market, you can create money.. how many millionaires were there 200 years ago? (even including inflation).. the world is getting richer!!0 -

If you are betting anyway you might want to look at matched betting. I started about 2 weeks ago and have made about £150 so far. That's with spending quite a small amount of time on it, having a very small start up pot and concentrating on the smaller amount free bets until I feel more confident on it - so obviously others could make much more.
To the person complaining about spending £20 a week on shopping - I fail to see how spending, say £100 a week gives you an exciting and fulfilled life. I would rather save on things like shopping which I personally see as 'boring' and have money to have treats elsewhere or to put towards having a better future.
Anyway, onto the master plan lol! I am feeling quite inspired by the idea of different revenue streams - I think before I had been quite stuck on the idea of having to have one thing that would become massive. Am trying to look at how can use my 'skills' to make more money so am looking at photography and am getting back into drawing so am looking at maybe starting to get commissions for portraits and also since I live in a very touristy place then maybe images of landmarks etc. I'm not very good at the more practical side of things but will try and get myself in gear!0 -

I think you should post in advance what you have put your stake on!
I've always been tempted to do this myself (it's only £1 after all!)
I wonder if anyone has ever successfully done this? Must say that if I was to try it, I think when I got to around the £512 or £1024 mark, I'd probably want to keep half and go back a stage so that if I did happen to lose at any future stage, at least I'll have won something! Although, saying that, I don't think I'd be best pleased if I go to £16384 and lost the lot of it!
This reminds me a bit of that Derren Brown show - remember when he filmed someone and kept giving them the name of the winning horse in a race. Little did anyone know (until the very end) that he'd started with thousands of people until the very last race when he would have had one person betting on each horse.
It would be great to have a little team together all starting on the same day and seeing who lasts the longest!!0 -
Hi,
This is a great thread! Big incentive for me now at 30 years old to hit a million by the time im 35
Problem is I have no idea how to do it! Im not very technically skilled...could cut grass I suppose! Enjoy writing and selling though. Work a 9-5 Monday to Friday, and earnings are rubbish to be honest.
No capital to speak of and ive got debt to clear, and this would help no end if I could find a way to do it. No wife, no kids, no ties and free of a crippling gambling addiction at last, and feel I can start afresh
Any ideas are welcome on ways I can make a few extra bob and get on my way to the million.
P.S. The £1 on the football idea is good in theory, but don't let it get a hold of you!! Times i've went into the bookies to put £5 on a coupon and then spent £100 on the roulette!!!!Stupid but its easily done....

Hey Paul,
Welcome to the thread! What things are you interested in writing about? Any other interests?
There's plenty of ways you can start making an income, it all depends on what you enjoy!0 -
