I would think that they got to your place through the DWP.

I wouldnt be too concerned though, but I would check with the DWP that they have your address and details as correct.

  • Come off it! What kind of good excuse do you have for running off without paying the rent?! (and also leaving someone else's property in ruins - I was sent a thick inspection report on the property that showed the damage and the costs of repair)

One good excuse is landlords ripping her off with high rent, over charging for credit checks, keeping her bond...need I go on.

  • It could be:

    1. a scam by the 'solicitor's office' as described above.
    2. identity fraud - someone (possibly the 'cow') using your address to commit benefit fraud or similar.
    3. an unfortunate mistake.

I'd type part of the letter into google and see if you get any useful hits.

BTW, why do LLs get such negative comments at the slightest opportunity? Tenants with chips on their shoulders I guess.

    :)

I didn't rise to the bait!

    Different folks, different strokes.
I only feel sorry for the previous owners of my home whenever baliffs come knocking at the door. Sorry that they got into the situation that they obviously have, sorry that they had to uproot their family & sorry that they needed to go bankrupt.

Sure some people reak havoc but others have unfortunate situations thrust upon them.

Which of these 'excuses' should leave the LL being owed a significant sum?

My tenants have done a similar thing costing me £880 in lost rent and leaving the house with 11 rooms requiring decorating, 2 carpets requiring replacement, broken fridge and dishwasher, 2 internal doors to be replaced, a number of stud walls with holes punched through and generally dirty.

One day, I will extract my revenge - starting with the courts system.

Assuming rent is up to date that would just leave the damage to be paid for. Maybe this could be claimed from the deceased's estate.

In my case its the next tenants who will suffer with increased bond, higher rent, a need to provide a guarantor and additional inspections by me.

BTW, my former tenants have had bailiffs looking for them too.

As I said, checked out solicitor's office and they are property solicitors based in Croydon and listed with several property listing websites. Thanks to useful comments by lynzpower, dunstonh and jonewer - will follow those up.

Some comments showed that we really live in an apologetic, politically correct, protect the criminals, and screw the victims society. Accepted that in certain circumstances people might have excuses to delay payments due, but let's be honest, you can't really say that BT charges way too much for their international calls so it's okay for me to use it and then not pay them, even if you're facing personal problems.

Just annoying that I have to waste my time dealing with something like this.
