Connections between New York airports

I'm currently looking at flights between Tokyo and Toronto, and the cheapest one I can find has a changeover in New York. But it's a two different airports.
Tokyo - Newark Liberty NY
LaGuardia NY - Toronto
How does that work, exactly? Do they drop me off in New York and expect me to find my own way between airports? I'm guessing I'll have to collect my bags and check them in again? Are there any visa issues since I'll have to leave the airport?
It's United Airlines if this is of any relevance.

Are you including both Tokyo airports Haneda HND and Narita HND in your searches?
TYO is the Tokyo all airports 3 letter code.
You'd need ESTA/Visa as you'd be entering the USA, transfer between Newark EWR and La Guardia LGA is unlikely to be included.
Is there a Newark EWR to Toronto flight as an alternative?
By the way YTO is the Toronto all airports 3 letter code.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0 -
Yeah, I've searched all Tokyo and all Toronto airports. My flight is actually a multi-stop flight from Saigon to Tokyo to Toronto and back to Saigon. Ideally, I'd like the Japan to Canada part of this trip to be a direct flight, but this diversion saved me £300, without stupid 12 hour changeover they sometimes offer on indirect flights. I've had a look at individual flights, but it seems far more expensive. The stupid thing is that sometimes when you look for the same flights they've just offered you as multi-flight deals, they've suddenly disappeared from their schedule.
Here are the details of the flight I'm talking about, just to make sure I'm reading it right.
Just seems a bit stupid to me that they offer a connecting flight that's not even at the same airport you're flying in to. That's not really a connecting flight, is it?0 -
Yeah looks like you are reading it right.I'm_With_Stupid wrote: »Just seems a bit stupid to me that they offer a connecting flight that's not even at the same airport you're flying in to. That's not really a connecting flight, is it?

You will have to find your own way from Newark to LaGuardia. You will need to factor in at least 4 hours, but probablya bit more0

Hey what are your dates for all the flights? Might be able to help..what's the price?Save £12K in 2013 £4000/90000

Well I just checked this morning and that flight option has disappeared from Opodo.
My dates are actually quite flexible. The only absolute is that I have to be in Canada at least a few days before my sister's wedding on the 7th January. And I'd like a week to nine days in Japan before that. Anyway, here's the dates I've been looking at:
25th Dec - Ho Chi Minh City to Tokyo (there's always a flight leaving at 23:55)
3rd Jan - Tokyo to Toronto
9th Jan Toronto to Ho Chi Minh
The cheapest price I can now find is £1323.70, although the one that's now disappeared was roughly £1030.
So yeah, if anyone can find a good deal, that'd be great.0 -
If I search for a return flight between the 25th Dec and 9th Jan, this is the cheapest option.

If I search for a return flight between the 3rd Jan and 9th Jan, I'm given the option of exactly the same flights at exactly the same times, for exactly the same price. However, when I try to use multi-stop to include a break in Tokyo in the middle, these flights no longer appear in the results. If anyone can work out how I can fly with this airline at this price with a week-long Japan break in the middle, I'd love to hear from you.0
