Given that a lot of the original development team on OO jumped ship to the Document Foundation (which then forked into LibreOffice) when Oracle announced (entirely predictable when they took over Sun Systems) that they couldn't support the ongoing open source project, the future for OO is probably fairly dim. Unless a new - altruistic - supporter is found OO is probably going to wither on the vine but perhaps common-sense would suggest that OO and LO might re-merge.
That having all been said I have recently moved over to LO 3.3 (from OOo 3.1) and whilst I know that a fair bit has been done "under the hood" since the split there is very little visual difference from OO. I agree - a thoroughly good replacement for the Microsloth slab.My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016).
For those seeking more detailed advice and guidance regarding small claims cases arising from private parking issues I recommend that you visit the Private Parking forum on PePiPoo.com0 -
AbiWord is another good alternative to MS Word or LO/OO. Much quicker to load than any of the others, but does have some compatability problems with complex formatting in MS Word, etc. I like to use it for short, simple documents that need a bit more than Notepad/Wordpad.0

Did try AbiWord a while back and was very disappointed, there are HUGE compatibility problems with MS Word. And of course it is only Word, it does not do Excel or Powerpoint.0

The question was about M$ Office, not OpenOffice (or LibreOffice).
The OP requested info about M$ Office, and the answer was given in Post #5.0 -

For an excel substitute I now just use Gnumeric spreadsheet. Again, lightweight, fast and can read Excel files without difficulty, unless you get into macros, etc. Rarely use powerpoint, except at work.0 -

Actually it was about MS WORD.
If all you need is a word processor why not use wordpad, supplied free with Windows?0 -
If you want to be pedantic about it, its name is Microsoft Office Word ("Word" is not all in uppercase).
And maybe if the thread had been entitled "Are there any free alternatives to MS Word?", then Write might've been a valid response.0 -
open office is decent. you could also try Abi Word, thats fairly ok too!I'm not normally a religious man, but... if you're up there, save me, Superman!0

("Word" is not all in uppercase).
But I was SHOUTING TO MAKE SURE YOU NOTICED.0 -
